855.0. "Is Quarterdeck a buy, sell, or hold?" by POBOX::CORSON (Higher, and a bit more to the right) Thu Apr 27 1995 21:23

With Quarterdeck (the old Quarterdeck Office Systems, Inc.[NASDQ-
QDEK]) having gone from $3.675 to $7.125 in the month of April,
and finally making money again with QEMM and new products for
the Internet, do you all think this might be a good investment.

I have shares purchased from $2.25 to $5.50 over the past year,
and am wondering if it is time to add more, or sell and take
    	the profits?

What do you thinks, my friends?

    You didn't do a dir/title="Quarterdeck" now, did you? ;-)

855.2New focus, new topic..POBOX::CORSONHigher, and a bit more to the rightFri Apr 28 1995 15:339

Yes, I did (as opposed to yes, I am ;-)). My question is more
on a different vein than STAC ratholes and comments last in March 94.

Still waiting for an articulate answer/comments..

    	Yours in profitable investing.

There's also been lots of ratholes on IBM, yet all discussion on IBM
has managed to be kept in one note, titled "IBM". Is it that hard
to keep notes concerning a company, especially a very tiny one,
    confined to one base note?
855.4Time to cool off?ASDG::HORTONPaving the Info HighwayFri Apr 28 1995 16:0521
  Greyhawk,

Any time I see that large a jump in so short a time I get
a little anxious (feeling that way about DEC, too).

The bull market is looking long in the tooth, and breadth
ain't so great. The "technology" darlings of Wall Street
have been bid up to unreasonable P/E's. No one knows when
the Fed is going to raise rates again to defend the dollar,
but I hear more and more folks saying it's needed. Dividend
yield on the S&P 500 is bumping along at historic lows.

So, while I don't have any specific knowledge about QDEK,
I'd be wary of holding on much longer. And I certainly
wouldn't be buying any more at current prices.

Why don't you pull out your original stake, and let your
  profits run?

  -Jerry
855.5My theory...POBOX::CORSONHigher, and a bit more to the rightFri Apr 28 1995 16:5922

Agree completely on the long in the tooth market; but some real
Wall St. geniuses (like Laszlo Birieny) think the market will pull
to 4800 before it tanks (and then only 5-10%). That kind of potential
gain makes it real hard to pull $$$ off the table today.

My technical charts show QDEK can go to $10 without resistence
and even $12 if the NASDQ goes to 850 (which ain't THAT far away)
I've been shifting big gainers to profits only and I'm now 30% in
cash, the highest I've been in four years.

BTW, my charts show DEC can hit 60 within the next 12 months
    easy based on $3.50 earnings per share in 1995 (Q3, Q4 FY95, Q1,
Q2 FY96) REGARDLESS of what the overall market does. So I'd hold
on the DEC with a visegrip.

Maybe I'll make Monday the determinent. If the market drops
Monday, I'll hold; if it is a big day, 50% QDEK is gone...

    	Thanks.

855.6WebAuthor is probably the cause of the price jumpCLUSTA::PEARSONTue May 02 1995 18:136
I think the jump in the stock price is due mainly to their new internet
technology, i.e. web authoring tools. I saw an article with some
analyst promoting QDEK recently, but don't recall where I read it.

Hopefully (as a PC user not a stock owner) someday, operating system
improvements will make their memory management software obsolete.
855.7Jeff Matthews of RAM Partners rates QDEK as a buyCLUSTA::PEARSONTue May 02 1995 21:425
Well I found the reference to QDEK in Computer Reseller News dated
4/24/95. The analyst is Jeff Matthews, a general partner of RAM
Partners. He rates Quarterdeck as a buy. Says, "The real sizzle
here is Internet products they are working on. When Wall Street
catches on, this could be a monster."

QDEK investor relations are at 310/314-3231. Corporate HQ is
1901 Main St. Santa Monica, CA (which may explain the time it takes
them to get new product out the door :-)) 310/392-9851.

Keep us up-to-date. I just purchased some more at 7 3/8 last
    week.

You're in the money then :-) NBR mentioned them teaming
up with UUNET as accounting for todays 15% gain.

ps: several notes back you thought it would go to 10/12 if the NASDAQ
gets to 850. NASDAQ is now around 870 :-)

    	That's OK, Jeff.

Now where is this stock headed? New management seems to have its
act together, and given what IBM premium-paid for Lotus, maybe
Microsquish would buy QDEK. Be about a $16 stock then.

855.16Quarterdeck Unveils New Internet Server And Client ProductsCLUSTA::PEARSONThu Jun 22 1995 21:3827

Quarterdeck Unveils New Internet Server And Client Products

Quarterdeck Corp. announced plans Thursday to introduce an inexpensive
World Wide Web server that runs on Microsoft Windows. WebServer for
Windows, to be available later this month for about $130, will run on
Windows 3.1x.

The server is designed to be used either in large corporations to
distribute internal corporate data, such as human resources policies or
marketing information, or in small businesses to set up a Web site for
marketing.

Quarterdeck, based in Santa Monica, Calif., enters a segment of the Web
server market where there isn't a lot of competition. Progress Software has
an inexpensive Web server for Windows, as does O'Reilly & Associates. Other
vendors, such as Netscape Communications and WAIS Inc., are focusing more
on high-end corporate users; their server software alone is often priced in
the thousands of dollars, and the servers often come with prepackaged
hardware that costs tens of thousands of dollars more.

Quarterdeck also has introduced its own Web browser, a version of the
standard Mosaic browser, priced at about $30. The software will be
available in a suite of five tools, including FTP (File Transfer Protocol),
Telnet for remote logins over the Internet, and Internet E-mail. The suite
of products will be available this month for about $80.

Just sold half my QDEK at $21/share. Caution has now overtaken
greed in the technology sector, so my feeling is taking $$$ off the
    table can't hurt.

To more than double your money is not a bad profit. And to sell
exactly half leaves you ahead even if the stock becomes worthless
