835.0. "RJR NABISCO....need info." by MPGS::DUTTA (moon...wind...waves...sand...) Fri Feb 24 1995 01:29

    Anyone has any purchase recommendation for the stock of
    RJR NABISCO Company. I know they make Biscuits and Cookies
    and they are all over the world... The stock closed today
    at 5 5/8. I think this was the 52 weeks low.

    Thanks,

    RJR is also a tobacco company and that is why the stock is probably so
    low. Everything I have read lately seems to indicate if RJR did not
    have tabocco (spelling intentional) it would be worth alot more even
    though tabocco is still very profitable. I have also been wondering
    if now is the time to buy.

835.2ZENDIA::FERGUSONNow that's an important ideaFri Feb 24 1995 12:484
i wouldn't touch it. right now, a big group of well-healed lawyers are
bringing the largest class-action lawsuit against the tobacco makers
on behalf of all smokers in the US! i'd steer clear until the outcome
of this is better know, unless of course, you wanna speculate.
835.3PCBUOA::KRATZFri Feb 24 1995 14:266
    On the other hand, smoking in the US actually increased last year;
    first time in 20, and overseas demand is strong. IMHO, Florida has
    a snowball's chance in, well, Florida of recovering Medicaid costs
    from the tobacco companies. If people want to ignore the warning
    on the side of the carton, that's their problem. I think it's
    a good speculative buy.

    RJR common stock plans to reverse-split 4-1 (or is it 5-1?) in the near
    futures, so if you buy 100 shares you'll end up with an odd lot soon.

	Why would they reverse split? Is it because the in effect reduces
	the number of outstanding shares, hence reduces paperwork overhead
	(less shares to keep track of)?

    From what I remember, the reason was to get a little more movement in
    the price. (Which seems backwards to me, but I'm not a finance guy)

    I remember it being around 4.75/share a little while ago, so the
    movement to 5.75 is a nice 20% gain.

	"little while" must be more than a year ago then?

    Umm, probably a year ago LAST october now that I think about it.

    (My definition of the term little while is "Any time period between 5
    minutes ago and when I was born". Vague, but handy in certain
    circumstances 8-) )

    If you want to understand the management, better see the movie
    "Barbarians at the Gate", or better yet, read the book. All about those
    wonderful folks who made "junk bond" a household term.
835.10Dividend PlayMR2MI1::BMORRISONThu Mar 02 1995 12:396
    RJR just declared a 30 cent dividend for shareholders of record on
    March 10th and payable on April 1. It's now going for about $5.25
    per share which makes it a real good dividend play at the moment.
    I'm considering it.

    I've been following this stock since the KKR takeover (1988 or 1989??)
    and it's always been in the $5 range, it goes up but then comes back
    down. Those who invested since the takeover have not been happy but
    if you buy&sell it's had some good 20% moves now and then.
    (going from 5 to 6 for example)
835.13How did the big change happen?MARVA2::BUCHMANUNIX refugee in a VMS worldThu Mar 09 1995 15:188
    Something I have never understood about this stock is the price after
    the KKR takeover. As I remember, they bought out the company at $102
    per share. So how did it end up down in the $5 region? Does the stock
    price represent only a portion of the original company, or have they
    sold off a bunch of assets, or what?
    			Thanks,
    				Jim

        The number of shares issued when going public (again) bears no
    resemblance to the number of shares circulating when the company
    went private. Heck, the assets involved need not bear any resemblance
    either. There is no way to compare the two instantiations of the
    name RJR.

835.15Is it a BUY Now.....?ACIS01::PATELMon Oct 09 1995 14:489
    Does anybody think that RJR Nabisco will get bought out, now that Icahn
    and another investor has applied for SEC clearance to buy 15% of RN.

    It has had a good move just since the rumor is out and now that I
    follow it daily, it has been inching upwards every day, even with the
    recent 'minor-correction' in the overall markets.
