825.0. "Software venture" by GRANPA::JHAGERTY () Wed Feb 01 1995 17:16

I'm looking for feedback on a business venture I'd like to tryout.
The short of it is...I'd be creating and selling a PC software program.

THE PRODUCT: Software that runs on a PC that in essence is a fitness
diary. A graphical, easy to use application that allows anyone
interested in fitness (running, weightlifting, arobics,biking...)
to input data that would result in documented progress or
regression over weeks, months or years.

THE DISTRIBUTION CHANNEL: Healthclubs, software stores, sports stores,
    and internet.

COST: Must be under $10. Millions of people are relentless on throwing
money at fitness related "stuff" to see if it gets them results. They
will initially pay for the curiousity, and if it were me, I wouldn't pay
more than $10 to cure my curiousity.

Thoughts or experience would be greatly appreciated.

I think your anwers are in your local public library. Spend a weekend
in the library and I am sure you'll have most of your questions
answered. Depends how much capital you are looking for, it may also be
a good idea to contact the SBA for some help.

Good luck! You get the right idea. :-)

I picked up a neat book at Barnes and Noble about developing and
selling shareware. I have the book at home and don't recall the name.

I would suggest that you get a book like this for several reasons.
First, it will give you some insight into all the details of producing
a product that works. Testing, installation procedures, configuration
testing, documentation, customer support, warranties, etc. are all
issues you will need to deal with.

A book like this will also tell you how to do a field test, identify
which features are important, how to price and market the product, etc.

    Have fun !

I've tried to reach the IBMPC_SHAREWARE notes conference and it doesn't
seem to exist. Could you double check that?

    Thanks

it is on HUMANE::IBMPC_SHAREWARE... if that doesn't work, check your
network database to see if HUMANE is defined correctly.
