509.0. "Levi-Strauss listed on any exchange?" by ZENDIA::FERGUSON (Your recipe is so tasty) Tue Jun 29 1993 13:02

Is Levi-Strauss, the maker of the famous Levi jeans, listed on any
exchanges? I've looked, but never have found... perhaps they are part of
a bigger company...

	thanks.

There is a company, featured in the latest issue of Financial World magazine
that produces a lot of the denim used by levis and others which might be an
interesting play. With the grung look in style, and jeans in general seemingly
always in style, FW says that this company has continued strong earnings
potential.

Levi Strauss was a public company years ago....in the early '80s I believe.
They either went private or were gobbled up.

Other public companies you may want to look at:

VF Corp. (NYSE) - apparel company with large jeans division (if memory
serves me right they make the "Guess" brand - very
                  popular with women)

Designs Inc. (NASDAQ) - fast-growth retailer that sells only Levis.
Stores are named "Designs by Levis" and are located
primarily in malls. I often stop in the stores
when I am in Florida. I havn't been able to find
any located around here - I don't know why - the
                        company is headquartered in Massachusetts.

Designs has a store in the Pheasant Lane Mall in Nashua NH.
They also have an outlet store in Kittery Maine. I think there
	are also more around here.

Sorry, didn't have a copy of the mag with me.

Here are the details (which I got wrong in the first place):

V.F. Corp, NYSE (VFC), $47 1/4, pe 11, yeild 2.3%
Known for their Lee, Rustler, and Wrangler Jeans (no levi's).
Sales have increased 46% over the last 2 years with earnings
jumping 194%. In April, the company reported its 7th consecutive
quarter of record sales and earnings "in an industry plagued by
high inventories and low consumer spending." 60% of this companies
operating profits come from its jeans business. Their dividend is
expected to increase.

FW states that "the biggest problem with V.F. isn't with V.F., but
the industry", which is out of favor on the street.

The above info comes from the July 6th issue of Financial World.

Thanks! I figured I would find one in either the Chestnut Hill Mall,
Natick Mall, or Burlington Mall but was unable to.
Now I know....head for Pheasant Lane next time.
