508.0. "Stride-Rite?" by ZENDIA::FERGUSON (Your recipe is so tasty) Tue Jun 29 1993 12:57

I'm curious as to what people think of Stride-Rite as a possible
investment opportunity.

Stride-Rite is a shoemaker located in the Boston area. The CEO just
stepped down and is defecting to biotech/food-type company. Its stock is
trading at about $15.50, far from its high of $30+ not too long ago. They've
been experiencing stale growth and erosion of profits over the last 2-3 years
(most likely due to the recession). They've also had quite a turnover of
CEOs in those times.

Stride-Rite is listed on the NYSE.

Interestingly, Stride-rite is featured in the Journal today (6/29).
The story about earnings (year over year) is not good. Management
instability is not good. No one is currently on board to run the
company. Their product line is being undercut by cheap knock offs.

So, there is very little to recommend this company. I am a contrarian,
and even I am going to wait to see who they pick for a replacement and
what is said when that person is picked. We may lose a little upside,
but we also may save ourselves any further downside.

    I hope this helps,

If you're still interested pick up the journal.

The Boston Globe also had a write up, which was my impetus for starting this
topic.

The Moneypaper recommended Stride-Rite for long-term accumulation
through the company's dividend reinvestment program. I've been
buying a few shares each month through the program's optional cash
investment option. Good way to implement dollar cost averaging.
With all us brand-conscious yuppies having kids now, SR might do
    very well.

How would one find out / sign up for the aforementioned DRP with this
company?

Some companies let DRPers buy the first share directly from
the company. Stride Rite is not one of these. You'll have to
buy one or more shares through a broker (I got mine through
Moneypaper's Buy-One-Share program: share price plus $15 fee).

Once you are a shareholder, contact the company at 617-491-8800
and ask for DRP enrollment materials.
