491.0. "Budget/debt advise provided by charity" by POBOX::GREEN (I've crossed the bridge) Fri Jun 04 1993 15:55
I want to share a recent positive experience with free/cheap advice.
One of my brothers was in over his head in credit card debt. When we
were asked for help, other sibs did the following:
o Gifted him enough cash so that he was no longer behind in
payments
o The gift was contingent on both brother and his wife obtaining
budget and debt consolidation advice. (The rest of us
didn't think it a good idea for to us to provide the
advice or know the details of their finances.)
Anyway, in perusing the yellow pages "Credit & Debt Counseling
Services", we came across a listing for "United Charities". For
somewhere between $0-$20, they helped brother and wife assess their
situation, develop a budget, and determine their financial priorities.
They appear to be dedicated to following their plan and seem to feel
much more in control of their finances.
We're not all born planners,
Gail
