297.0. "Extra perks with stocks (and dividend reinvest.)" by SATIRE::MATATIA () Wed Oct 21 1992 10:50

    This is kind of a fun topic, we all buy our stock with hopes of a
    growth in its value. We all appreciate a nice dividend. Sometimes
    stocks offer more. I would like to have this note dedicated to extra
    perks and reinvestment plans. I'll start with a list of a few I have
    come by in the past few years. (Just remeber if you buy through
    a broker the stocks must be in your name not street name...I find if it
    remains in street names I only get the financial reports). Realize
    this information is subject to change over time.

    Wendys	-Coupon for free meal on initial investment
    		-Dividend reinvestment program (no transaction fee)
    Radio Shack -10% discount coupon good between thanksgiving and x-mas
    		 on sale and non-sale merchandise.
    TCBYs	-2 Quarterly statements ago contained a coupon for a free
    		 frozen yogert.
    Sears	-Dividend reinvestment (small transaction fee)
    GTE -Dividend reinvestment (no transaction fee)

297.1Yes It Is?WFOV11::CERVONEWed Oct 21 1992 15:279
    Yes it is! Disney's stock I believe you get up to 40% off Hotels,
    admission, etc. when you vacation at Disneyworld or Disneyland, plus a
    discount at the Disney stores.

    What do we get with the purchase of dec stock, well we get a right off
    on our taxes do to a loss in profit if you dont sell every six months
    during the buy periods.

297.2KodakAIMENG::AIM002::grinnellWed Oct 21 1992 19:512
Add Kodak to list the list of companies that will do free
dividend reinvestment (there are a lot of these)

    	What's the details on the Radio Shack plan? Any minimum number of
    shares (greater than 1, that is ;-) that has to be owned? On what date
    is the stock ownership list used to generate the coupon mailings?
    Thanks!

297.4Radio Shack or Tandy (SAME)?WFOV11::CERVONEThu Oct 22 1992 15:4010
    Radio Shack or Tandy which is it - In Sept. In Money magazine there was a
    good right up on Tandy. It stated that it was going to go up in price
    by over 50%.

    Are these one and the same or are they two different stocks on NYSE?

    The stock was at 23 3/8 in early Sept it closed yesterday at 26 1/2
    -3/4. I think Tandy will do well in the next 12 to 18 months as was
    predicted in Money Mag.

297.5TANDY == Radio ShackSATIRE::MATATIAFri Oct 23 1992 10:118
    Its not a coupon its a letter thats mailed out. Yes its actually TANDY
    corp. (Don't confuse it with TANDY crafts which was doing well and had
    some profit taking yesterday). You take the letter to the radio shack
    dealer for the discount (surrendering the letter). Usually companies
    do not differ between 1 share and xxx shares....an owner is an owner.
    But if you want to be sure check with the company.

297.6SFC01::SFC04::SMITHPWritten but not readFri Oct 23 1992 20:462
Whats the deal on Disney and who do you contact?
Whats the diff between street name and your name?
297.7BRAT::REDZIN::DCOXSat Oct 24 1992 10:3725
    The "deal" on Disney is that stockholders get a "card" and are in the
    Magic Kingdom Club. The card is good for 10% discounts in Disney
    retail stores scattered throughout the country as well as in retail
    stores at their resorts. The club members enjoy discounts on rooms &
    admission at the parks as well as discounts on Cruise packages and
    National rental cars. At the annual meeting, you get an extra room
    discount, but the base price is so bloody high that it tends to
    discourage middle income investors from staying there.

    You buy Disney stock through a broker. Disney used to have a dividend
    re-investment plan which was nice in principal but poor in interest -
    pun intended; they are a growth company with miniscule dividends per
    share. Disney is an EXTREMELY well managed company; unlike some we are
    intimately familiar with. They take a hard-nosed approach to customer
    satisfaction, revenues and expenses (sigh.....). Our initial investment
    in Disney has doubled in about 5 years which is a very good, although not
    fantastic, ROI.

    In my opinion, "freebies" should be treated just as that and should not
    be a factor in making investment decisions. Unless, of course, you can
    PLAN on realizing savings through those freebies and then that would
    factor into the ROI. But most people do not buy enough at the Disney
    stores to fit into that category.

    BTW if you are planning to buy DISney I suggest a year from now would
    be a better time than right now. Likely we'll see another recession
    next summer as Clinton tries to get the medicine out of the way early
    in his administration so the economy is booming in time for 1996.
    Which would be bad news for all Disneyland sales. All IMHO, of course.

297.9New Plan RealtyLEDS::VESESKISTue Oct 27 1992 20:506

    	New Plan Realty, a REIT, has a DRP that gives you 15% off on
    subsequent purchases under the plan. Not really a perk, more like a
    bonus. Trades on the NYSE.

297.10Disney Stocks a good gift for kidsMEMORY::BEAULIEUMon Nov 02 1992 14:317
    Another comment about Disney: I read that Disney stock certificates
    have pictures of Disney characters on them. ( I believe I read this in
    an article that Money magazine did this year on the subject of perks
    which I will try to find and add to this note). Anyway, these
    certificates make an interesting gift for children ... not only are
    they fun to look at but the kids can follow thier stock in the paper as
    well.
297.11Disney stock ... not FOR KIDS ONLYDABEAN::NEARYBob NearyMon Nov 02 1992 15:378
    Yes it does. (Or at least it used to.) Mine has about a dozen
    characters on it in color, surrounding Walt's face. The rest of the
    certificate is blueish in color. A relative bought me one share in
    1985 since I collect Disney stuff ...(paid about $50 then).
    It's funny, since I got that one and have told other people, I know
    about 20 people who have bought one share.
    FYI, in the annual report I remember reading that 60-65% of the owners
    of Disney stock own only one share.
297.12CelticsROCK::MURPHYMon Nov 02 1992 19:397
As a recent Boston arrival, I was thinking of duplicating the aforementioned
one share gift strategem for Celtics shares. If I wanted to give out, say 4 or
5 single share gifts, does anyone know how I could minimize my commission costs?

297.13One purchase got all..then deliver eachDABEAN::NEARYBob NearyMon Nov 02 1992 20:054
    My brother-in-law bought several shares for his kids as a
    custodian,then after the sale had them delivered indiviually in each of
    the kids names.
