210.0. "Eurotunnel" by MUHIS::HSTOECKLIN () Tue May 26 1992 14:19

    	I'd like to know what you think about Eurotunnel. Who does
    	consider it a long term investment?

    I have stock in it and have high hopes. I'm English and now work and
    live in the United States. Many times I've travelled across the Channel
    via ferry. There is a definite market for the tunnel! Plus I expect
    you'll see a lot of freight using the tunnel, as time is money for
    truckers.

    I don't see the tunnel collapsing under the weight of its financing.
    Duty-Free will not go away at the end of 1992, so that will help
    revenue.

    So, I'm bullish. But definitely long-term.

210.2a roadblock?MUHIS::HSTOECKLINWed May 27 1992 08:108

    That's what generates my optimism, too. On the other hand, what
    moderates my optimism, is that the English tend to use the wrong
    side of the road ... ;-)   I mean that could be a real 'road'block;
    but, I have to admit, that I've never been to GB by car.
    What do you think?

    The British already cross the channel in huge numbers by car to go on
    vacation. Trust me, I've done it a million times. You soon forget which
    side of the road you're supposed to be in, and just follow the cars in
    front.

    I belive traffic will be greater than it is now via ferry

    1. Direct London - Paris/Berlin/Brussels trains will replace flying.
       This will be city-centre to city-centre without having to leave your
       chair.

    2. Disneyland. Euro-Disney is up and running. Expect to see many
       tourists travelling from England to Euro-Disney via train. I expect
       they'll be a booming charter business from all corners of the
       country.

    It is my believe that the current high level of cross-channel traffic
    is under its potential, and is constrained by the method of
    travel(ferry or plane). Once convenient trans start running, I expect a
    lot of new travel will start.

210.4No Light at the end of the TunnelSUBWAY::SAMBAMURTYRajaThu May 28 1992 15:185
    There is an article in The New York Times (today, 28-May-1992) which
    suggests that the eurotunnel is tettering on bankruptcy (I didn't read
    the whole article). Evidently its share price on the London & Paris
    exchanges have been going down in anticipation. Those of interested in
    investing in EuroTunnel may want to read this article.
210.5No Dividend this centuryNEWOA::MACLEODTue Jun 09 1992 11:236

    It is regarded as a very risky stock. It will open (sometime), the
    French will not let it fail. But because of the massive cost overrun,
    if you do invest you're unlikey to see a dividend this century.

    Sure, I don't expect any dividends to be paid within the next
    eight years. But I if I'm willing to stay long-term with this
    stock it might become a "tenbagger" (Peter Lynch).

    By the way, I recently heard rumours about a fast channel ferry
    (more than 300 mph ! ) going to be build. Can someone point to a more
    serious source of information?

   No but assuming ferry means boat... That's REAL scary at that kind of
speed. Most of the trains only do 1/2 that and this is over water which
you have much less control. I presume this is a hovercraft type of thingie.
210.8How fast for a _boat_??SSBN1::YANKESThu Jun 11 1992 17:266

    	Re: last two

    	I don't think that even racing boats go anywhere near 300 mph.

    ok., ok. should have asked my english teacher ...
    what I had in mind when I used the term 'ferry' was
    a combination of an aircraft and a ship, that could carry
    about 400 people . Of course it has to behave like an aircraft
    when crossing the channel, otherwise it would show a large
    'hit rate' ;-).

210.10Still sounds a bit fast...SSDEVO::RMCLEANSat Jun 13 1992 21:262
  Sounds more like a hovercraft and I sure wouldn't want to try that at those
speeds. Yes they fly but... not very high.

    you probably saw popular mechanics like I did.

    The Russians are building a huge plane that "flys" in ground effect at
    50ft or so. 300+ mph very possible. They've tested it over the Russian
    plains in the North.

    A steppe-by-steppe process, no doubt...

	You aren't EVER getting me in a tunnel.

	The ferry companies are investing in larger and faster transport to
	get the traffic now, and keep the people happy. P+O could be a good
	bet!

	The areas where I think the tunnel could attract is city-to-city
	people, (airlines) and maybe heavy goods - depending on the high speed
	rail-link, which is still under debate.

	I'm not an high risk investor, and would go for the ferry companies,
	not the tunnel. I'd avoid the airlines - they seem to be on a
	loose/loose

	Heather - of course, if the roads remained blocked much longer, then the
	airlines might just be worth a flutter :-)
