569.0. "Editing Cyrillic?" by NETRIX::"jarkko.hietaniemi@fno.mts.dec.com" (Jarkko Hietaniemi) Mon Mar 03 1997 11:11

How to use and most importantly _edit_ Cyrillic text in Digital UNIX? My
customer has
installed all the Russian Worldwide subsets. He is using the Russian
keymap and a Russian font
-using dxterm but when he presses the Mode_switch (no matter whatever key
combination)
which is AFAIK the supposed key combination to switch to/from Russian the
mode all the
applications stop echoing the characters. That is, for example
dxterm/xterm do not show
anything when one presses, for example, "a".

BUT: if one uses the 'xev' program one can see that the right characters
are sensed by the X
Window System: for example, in an LK401 pressing the "a" generates
'keycode 194 (keysym
0x6c6, Cyrillic_ef)' BUT note this: 'XLookupString gives 0 characters:
""'. The situation is not
stuck for good: pressing Mode_switch again restores the situation to
'Latin'.

What the customer would like to do eventually is to edit Russian text,
that is, ISO 8859-5 text.
