I am trying to find a small amount of sheet brass to use as shims
for a jointer (and other small projects if I find enough).
I really only need a few pieces in the 1"x3" or bigger size, but
would be happy to buy larger pieces for future use.

Can anyone recomend a source in the Souther NH area, or is anyone
interested in selling a few scraps they have hanging around?

    Steve

Try Nolan Supply in Syracuse, (800-736-2204). They'll mail you a set of shims
for a reasonable rate (approx. $20).

I bought a set of shims to narrow the throat of a Norris smoothing plane. The
set I bought wasn't brass but I'd be willing to bet they also have brass shims.

The set that I bought included 15 6"x12" sheets graduated from .001-.031 in
even increments. The salesperson I talked to indicated they sold lots of
different sets with different shim sizes.

good luck,
Chris

When I was doing jewlery, I was told that the place behind the Premier
8 cinema on 101A (Post Road Plaza) there is a scap metal place
(Merrimack Scrap Metals?) that would sell small quantities of brass.
The instructor had picked up some scrap sheet there.

Yes that is the name of the place.

I got some brass shim stock at the hobby store in the T J Maxx plaza
across from the pheasant lane mall. In my case I knew that I needed
    some .040 stock.

Merrimack Metals is a great place to go scrounge. You do need to be
lucky in that they do not always have the greatest selection.

I will try to get a better idea of what thickness I need and
then check out the local sources first.

I happened to buy a copy of American Woodworker last night that
has an article (yet another one!) on tuning a jointer. In it there
is mention of a source of thin brass shims, which I believe come in
    a kit of assorted thickness.
