346.0. "If breezecom can why cannot we?" by STKHLM::WEBJORN () Wed Apr 16 1997 14:35

What is the story on RoamAbout 2400 XX regarding external antennna?

Upgrade communictions sell BreezeCom SA-10D and AP-10D 2.4 Ghz
units WITH external antenna capability. This means that they have
managed to get past the European Union Bureaucrats regarding
ETSI standardisation, which was the obstacle trying to sell
extended range wireless LAN's on the Euro market.

As far as I know, the apropriate ETSI standard prescribed a maximum
ERP ( effective radiated power ) rendering all attempts to increase
range by focusing the RF or using more efficient antennas unlawful
or at leas in the gray zone...

They claim to have passed certification, so rules ( or interpretation)
    must have changed.

    What are we Digital doing?
Are we coming out with units + directional antennas in Europe?

    Btw,

    Breezecom states 3 Mbit/sec top speed, fallback to 1 / 2 Mbit,
longer range when run 'barefoot', and now external antennas.

    Please comment....

346.1It's coming....IROCZ::SCHWARTZMon May 05 1997 21:5214
    Hi Gullik,

We are currently working with an antenna company in the UK to productize
a building to building solution. It requires a very specialized
antenna in Europe as there is a limit on the transmit power of 100mW
which won't go far. This antenna vendor has a specialized antenna that
has high gain on the receiver and low gain on the transmit side.

This antenna vendor is going through the regulatory issues to get
approval in the ETSI countries. We are hoping to be able to ship into
    Europe in July-August timeframe.

346.2It can be done easily and cheapelySTKHLM::WEBJORNWed May 14 1997 11:2916

It seems that what Breezecom have done is to reduce the power from
100 mW with the same amount of dB as their antennas give. That way the
EIRP is constant, and they pass ETSI certifications. The gain of the
path is on the receive side, where they have matching little beams.

This limits the modifications to REDUCING power output, adding a
connector and certifying the whole rig.

    P.S. they claim 5 km ( 3 miles )

346.3We too will have it in the July timeframe.IROCZ::SCHWARTZWed May 14 1997 16:0010
    Hi Gullik,

Yes, that is true. As I mentioned we too will have a product in the
July timeframe. Our Txd gain will be in the area of +3dB and the RxD
gain will be +12dB. This should get us between 3 and 5Km.

And no matter who little the change is, it still requires a regulatory
approval, which unfortunately takes time and energy.
