1003.0. "Orson Scott Card's Xenocide" by SSGV02::TANG () Thu Jul 25 1991 13:31

Has anyone read _Xenocide_ yet? Is it worth shelling out big bucks (at
least for someone who gets most of her stuff at used bookstores) for
the hardcover? What I'm wondering is if this is a genuinely good book,
or if Orson Scott Card has just fallen desperately ill with sequelitis.

    Thanks,
    Scarlet

I Just picked up Xenocide at my local bookstore (Lauriat's at the Pheasant Lane
Mall, Nashua, NH, USA, Planet 3) -- it's $21.95.

I can't wait to read Xenocide. OSC is coming to our local book store
later in July to sign copies.

But the best news I've heard yet is that it's only part of the story.
Apparently Orson submitted a very large manuscript which has been
edited into two books. What fun!

According to Beth Meacham, who is Orson Scott Card's editor at Tor, yes,
there will be a sequel to XENOCIDE. However, she was quite clear in stating
that the sequel is not written, and she has no idea when he will write it.

Card's next book after XENOCIDE will be in a completely new series. No, she
doesn't know when he'll be writing the next Alvin Maker book, either.

Sorry for the less-than-good news, but there it is. When Card signs books
in your neighborhood, why don't you ask after his writing plans and post
the results here?

I just finished reading Zenocide and was very impressed in the way the
whole ender series progresses in its , involvness[?], I don't have the
right word for what I'm trying to say, but what I mean is Enders Game
was an excellent and fast paced book, Speaker for the Dead was even
better with more inciteful thaughts toward human nature and more
detailed in the way Ender has grown and matured as well as Val has
grown and evolved . Zenocide was every bit wirth the wait and the price
of the hard cover, more and more I found that O.S.C. has seemed to be
able to see into the mind of the serious reader and is able to ask
questions about life the human sykie (sp), and creation , as well as
    our hopes and dreams.
As far as a sequel to Zenocide goes I for one eagerly
await it's coming as there were to many loose ends,(or Enders,[just a
tease for those who haven't read Zenocide yet],) , to acount for.

IMO, on a scale of ten, 'Ender's game was a 9, and 'Speaker for
the Dead' was a 10, 'Xenocide is a 7.5. Good, but not _as_
    good as the first two.

    It's funny. I thought _Ender's_Game_ was a 10 and _Speaker_for_the_Dead_
was a 6; so I've delayed picking up _Xenocide_ until it comes out on
paper and I've nothing else to read. Card can have his dragged-out
(and dull!) plotlines, give me a good adventure that builds to a climax
    any day.

I hate to admit this, but I'm disappointed in Xenocide. In fact, I
am about halfway through and haven't read anything more in over a week.
Altho, the stuff going on on Path is interesting.

I agree that Ender's Game was at least a 10.

re .34 - Hmmm, I've had exactly the same experience, got halfway
through it about three weeks ago, put it down and picked something else
up, haven't gone back to it yet, though I keep thinking, "Gee, I really
should finish Xenocide...". And I read both Ender's Game and Speaker
    for the Dead nonstop.

It's not so much that I'm disappointed, as just not "engaged".

I agree, although I did finish the book, to those who haven't -
don't worry about it, its kinda disapointing.

I really started getting the feeling that Card's favorite book of all
time was Heinlien's Number_Of_The_Beast.

To say the least, I was unimpressed.

1003.10Still waiting on the edge of my seat for the next oneSTARCH::JSLOVEJ. Spencer Love; 237-2751; SHR1-3/E29Thu Aug 08 1991 21:0814
My reaction was disappointment for a different reason. Although the book was
interesting, and I was involved, the ending is a cliffhanger. I can't say more
without a spoiler notice, but I really want to see the end of the story.

The whole story of Path is sort of like book 5 of the Thomas Covenant series.
It is interesting, has all the right mythic stuff, but when you get to the end
you ask yourself why you didn't go straight from book 4 to book 6. The story
isn't advanced in the way that I expected.

I'm still impressed with Card and Wiggin, but this is only the first half or
even third of a much longer book. At least it didn't end like Hyperion. I
still haven't forgiven Simmons for that one.

Any news of Xenocide in the UK?

Sounds like the book is part 3 in an n-part series now, rather than the
last book of a trilogy. Hope that things go no further than a part 4.
I'd hate to see Card getting serialitis.

I just finished reading Xenocide and I really enjoyed it. I think I
liked it better than Speaker for the Dead but not by much. I like the
way the characters have evolved throughout the series. Jane is certainly
evolving. I also thought the bit about the "Wiggins" was interesting.
Any word on the next novel ?

Well, I finally am re-reading this book, and I still like it, up
to the part where (spoiler alert)

Ender gets into the FTL ship and comes out with Peter and a young
Valentine. I think Card loses it there. I'm sorta glad I don't
remember the ending from the first reading ;-) On the other hand,
most of my favorite books have very memorable endings.
1003.16pretty much a wrapSA1794::CHARBONNDIt's not the thing you fling,Tue Feb 04 1992 16:596
Finished this book (second reading) last night. Card really doesn't
leave much for a sequel. (spoiler alert)

The new Peter will take over, call off the fleet. The recolada is
already working. Ender will join the monastery to be with Novinha.
The world Path is healed. Young Val? Probably marry Miro.
