1248.0. "Earth 2 (TV SF show)?" by TPSYS::LAING (Soft-Core Cuddler * TAY1-2/H9 * 227-4472) Tue Sep 06 1994 19:02

I've seen ads for a new TV show entitled "Earth 2", with a subtitle
that is something like "here, we are all aliens". Sunday 7pm, NBC.
    Anyone know more?

Not much. Set a few hundred years in the future. Earth II is a colony
planet around another star, the "Here, we are the aliens" means that
the natives are getting restless. I've heard it may be another Spielberg
project, but I've also heard that he pulled out of it. From the one
commercial I've seen, it looks like they are using CGI, much like Babylon
5. And that's about it.

There was a TV film of the same title made around 1974 concerning
the goings on of an Earth-orbiting space station just a few decades
in the future. All I remember of it is that they captured a Chinese
satellite that was actually an orbital bomb (those pesky Commies!).
One of the crew members decided to rid the station of the bomb by
herself by aiming the docking port at the Sun and ejecting it.
Instead the bomb headed towards Earth and was threatening to spread
radioactive material everywhere once it entered the atmosphere.
They sent out a rescue team and that's all I remember.

Oh yes - the first parts of the Earth II space station were
actually taken from the Manned Orbital Laboratory (MOL) design of
the late 1960s. It was a military station with a Gemini craft
attached that was cancelled in 1969.

Guess she didn't know much about orbital mechanics, eh?

I guess it depends on how strong she is.

With realistic manual ejection the bomb is just going to return to the
station. Earth is not going to be threatened. I'm not sure how the
threat to the station is altered if the bomb detonates before returning.

Centures in the future, Earth's people are forced to live in giant space
stations, a lo "Silent Running". Scientists lead secreat expectations

I thought the pilot was a strong effort; we'll have to see if they
    stumble in the weekly grind.

Something they did much better than Seaquest was give us a strong sense
of who these people were. Seaquest got too caught up in its technology
(big sub, talking dolphin) to define its characters.
1248.12HELIX::RUZICHRealtime Software EngineeringFri Nov 11 1994 16:2411
I was encouraged. The characters were well drawn, much more
sympathetic than those on Babylon 5.

Personally, I detest cutesy little ETs, so I was very pleasantly
surprised to see what the little guy could do with those suspicious
    looking claws.

If they can put some imagination into the scripts, and they don't fall
into a rut, it may we worth watching.

Depends on the species. For those that reproduce but once (albeit
potentially producing a large number of offspring) the comment is
correct. Otherwise, being killed during your reproductive life reduces
the number of your offspring relative to an individual who just keeps
    on (ahem) going. (-:

Even that's not always true -- the sacrifice of an individual may
contribute to the survival of the young. E.g., the mother bird who
flutters along the ground, making motions as if injured and easy prey
and moves away from the nest, may have more young that survive than the
bird who survives by flying away from the nest.

And conversely, just bearing the young doesn't contribute their or your
genes to the subsequent pool if you are needed to rear them to breeding age.

But I tend to agree, this alleged commander doesn't (didn't) seem well-suited
for command. But he was a space farer, not a groundling. I guess he just
doesn't know what you're likely to find holed up in a cave.
And he's mad as hell at having his mission all mucked up too.

I'm not sure the commander isn't being made stupid by plot conventions.
All he had to do is say, "Ya know, this guy doesn't really check out.
I'm gonna follow him the next time he sneaks off." But then we'd lose
all that wonderful "dramatic tension" -- when _are_ they going to
figure out that he's not a good guy? I wouldn't mind seeing some
really smart, sensible people in popular entertainment.

He had found out that Terrians have some sort of biological impulse
against attack their own kind and wore a necklace of Terrian bones,
which allowed him to attack and manhandle them without resistance. He
had used this to put shock collars on members of a local tribe,
enslaving them. One of the tribe avoided this fate and led the other
people from Earth to him. After some traps and twists in the plot, the
little girl realized he was bad and pulled his necklace off, after
which the Terrians pulled him under the ground, apparently to his

yeah, I saw that as one possibility, but it seems a bit obvious.

From a nit viewpoint, _where_ is Rielly (her VR contact)? Are those
VR comm-thingies supposed to provide FTL communication, or is he some
place else on the same planet??

For that matter, do those VR comm-thingies make any "sense"? We've seen
that when users are "near" each other, they share the same VR space (as
in the dance scene in that one episode, as well as the little girl who
eavesdropped on the doctor), but conversely the doctor was in VR with
    someone who isn't anywhere's "near"?

The only other thing I've picked up is that they seem to operate as VR
devices (pretty heavy duty at that - the doctor couldn't tell that she
was actually strapped down to a cot in one scene) when you unfold both
eyepieces, but simple range-limited communicators otherwise.

I still have some reservations about this show and Sea Quest (which
follows it on our station) for that matter and i think it may be because
in a way they are very much "Earthbound", the equipment is very ordinery
in most cases and looks like something we could be using today.
maybe i am so used to the really futuristic things they use in Star
Trek and Star Wars that i am getting a bit jaded.

I liked the pilot so I am giving it a chance to grow on me.

There is one thing that I can't shake the image of, when my kids were
young they liked a movie called Jason And The Argonauts, in it was a
scene where skeletons came out of the ground to fight Jason and his men,
every time i see a Terrian come up out of the ground i think of that
    scene in the movie.

By the way i am new in this note, maybe i should introduce myself, my
name is Joan and i work out of TRO, i do not read read sci fi but do
enjoy most of the movies and TV shows on the sucject. The closest i ever
came to reading sci fi is Mary Stewarts books about Merlin and King
Arthur, which i know goes under catargory of Myth but i find the two
subjects very close, they both make you use your imagination which in

Welcome, Joan. You could even "introduce" yourself more formally in

P.S. I haven't seen "Earth 2". I don't think it has made it down under

Personally, I think it was rather short-sighted of them to reveal
themselves to Reilly, and to destroy the communicator. It could have
proven handy to continue to mis-lead him (like the doc did about the
boy being shot in order to find out the Zed's vulnerability, etc).

Definitely a decent SF series worth watching; it's kind of nice having
a variety of episodic SF on TV nowadays. I used to follow ST:TNG, have
been following X-Files and B5 (never could get hooked on ST:DS9), and
have added Earth-2 to my list. (ST:VOY looks promising, too).

I thought this was a cheap dramatic trick.
Now we have to love him because he was a "hero" instead of a criminal?
I'd rather have respected him and his current role as a mind-wiped criminal

This is supposed to explain why he hasn't failed like all the other Yales?

On the one hand, it would have been interesting to deal with the issues
of rehabilitation, and how much one's experiences shape one's
character. On the other hand, as I understand it, the cyborgs were
derived from fairly unregenerate criminals, so short of a miraculous

There's yet another community of humans on the planet.
We had a whole episode about them a few weeks ago.
Danziger got sick and lost on a scouting/foraging expedition and
they (these other humans) found him. They were led by an old guy who
had had dream contact with Devon before she left Earth, so there was
some spooky deja vu involved.

More would probably be a spoiler.....

I think that this is one of the crypto-facets of the whole plot structure
for the show. The Earth hierarchy HAS been using the planet for dumping
and lots of other stuff in ways generally not known.
There's the penal colony, there's the people who set up the biodome,
there was the holographic woman with her insane son....

No, it follows their recent episodes. The blurb showed it as winter,
and them in desperate straits for food; if I remember correctly, the
humans and the xxxx (the big ugly dumb aliens) were eying each other.

Title was something like "The Hunger"

I saw a little more in the commercial. It looks like Danziger is
going to break down and kill the alien for food. He is held back
by everyone. In the next scene the alien has True and Danziger is
    saying, no not her.

Hi, I enjoyed both episodes of Earth2 last night. I do hope that it
stays on the air. Heck, they are still making new episodes of
Seaquest and if that show can stay on the air, then Earth2 should be
safe. The show that ran from 8 till 9 really affected me, the
senseless killing of the Grenline (sp?) was more than I could take. I
was crying my eyes out during the last scene.

Weird - they keep Seaquest around but kill this one.

I wonder how much of a surprise it was; I saw the actor that plays
Danziger on an FX cable channel show recently plugging Earth 2.

odd thing about Seaquest is that Roy Schieder (sp?) will only be
appearing in a few of the new episodes. That should really make
    it a bore.

    Regarding Seaquest...at a Star Trek convention I went to (I can't
believe I'm admitting that in a public place!!!:):) ) there was a
break out session on Seaquest. The people hosting the breakout
were people who work at Universal and know the actors. They told
us that the actors were not happy with the way the show was going..
to corny. The actors are not kept informed on what it is that they
should be looking at (ie. a lot of the effects are computer generated
after the actors to their piece, therefore, sometimes they aren't
acting properly scared or whatever, because they don't really know
what they are reacting to.) They are troubled by all the
inconsistencies in the show and they feel that NBC is setting
themselves up to fail. Roy Schiender in particular is upset with
everything. The show was renewed and in the new season, Roy schiender
will take on more of a producer's role. He agreed to another
season only if he had more control. I think his input will make
a real difference in the show. I think the concept of the show is
pretty good, but they have gone to far off on a tangent.

Overall, the people had only nice things to say about all the actors.
They (the actors) want to put out a good, entertaining, family type
of show and they are hoping for support from the viewers.

BAck to Earth 2, I'm really surprised they cancelled it. I thought
the people writing in managed to save it.

...Warning: Spoilers follow for Earth 2...

The show opens with the group burying one of the party members,
seems they have all been sick since entering a canyon, and
            she was the first casualty.

Later the group is deciding what needs to be done, Julia,
the doctor can't figure out what could be causing the illness.
Morgan, reacts in fear as usual, yells at Julia and leaves
in a huff to a small field where he puts on his vr-gear and
begins playing the drums. Flash, another person appears in the
holo program and convinces Morgan to program the humvee to stop
where an earth ship has crashed.

They enter the ship to find several cryogenic chambers still
running with people asleep inside. Morgan recognizes one of
them, Bennet, as the man who came to him over the vr-gear.

Later, the group is deciding what to do about the sleepers. Morgan
sneaks into the caspule and activates the chambers to awaken
the crew. Danzinger and Julia find Morgan as the chambers begin
to cycle, out of the six only two awake, Bennet and his wife.

It turns out that Bennet's wife is also a doctor and after doing
a post mortem on the exumed body of the dead woman, the group
learns that all of them had been implanted with some type of
bio-chip that becomes part of the brain's sysnapses and can
transmit the person's health status. We also learn that there
is a sophisticated computer orbiting the planet that Bennet
had created when they first arrived about 50 years ago.

For reasons unknown Bennet infected the computer, Eve, with a
virus that would cause it to self destruct in fifty years,
of course Bennet had planned on being back on Earth when that
happened, but Eve never sent them home. Now, the virus was
causing feedback wich was effecting anyone with a bio-chip
in them and only Bennet could upload the cure from the
ship on the planet, which he wouldn't because of this incident
that happened. It also, seems that Bennet programmed as part
of the virus another personality into Eve, that of the council
member that Julia had been taking to at the begining of the
            series.

Bennet's health quickly fails from the suspended animation and
dies. Julia manages to convince his wife to save them, she
gives them the means to upload the patch to Eve only at great
risk to Yale, who must navigate cyberspace to the correct
files. Eve manages to open the files with Yale's help and
the feedback disappears... Bennet's wife dies... Everyone is
            saved...

Except for Devon who collapses in the final minutes of the show
with her voice-over of how she had been ill for a long time
and that she never had a bio-chip implanted... The final scenes
are of spinning, groggy, dark, light shots as if we were
looking through the eyes of Devon... Through the echos of the
group we can her Julia saying she doesn't know what's wrong.
You can tell that they are taking Devon somewhere and then a
opaque cover surrounds her, the camera angle shifts to show
that they have placed her in one of the cryo capsules and
            sent her into sleep...

Hi - I know this is a little off topic, but I'm sure there are a bunch of
Antonio Sabato fans who are lurking around here, still missing the good ole
Jagger days (nice, BTW, that the GH writers had Robin think to call call him
when she was looking for Stone - gotta love GH's continuity, it's been so good
lately!). Anyway, I'm posting this (only once, I promise!) for all of you
who have been turning to Earth 2 to get your Antonio fix. You may or may not
know that NBc has axed the show, but that UPN is considering picking it up. If
you'd like to see Antonio back on the tube on a regular basis this fall
(because no, he's not going to be coming back to GH, it seems), you may get
your wish from UPN - *if* they get enough letters in favor of the show! There's
a letter-writing campaign underway for this purpose; so if you'd like to
take part, and get us all another season of Mr. Ohsofine on the air, here's the
info:
send a letter/postcard to
Michael Sullivan, President of Entertainment
UPN Broadcasting
Paramount Pictures
5555 Melrose Avenue
MOB 12000
Hollywood, CA 90038-3197

and write "Attention: Earth2" on the envelope/postcard front!

If you want more info about all this stuff, please feel free to email me!

PS: If you're really avid, multiple letters are fine, as are letters from
friends, family, roommates, pets, strangers on the street, very small rocks...

Yeah, there has been quite a bit of activity in alt.tv.earth2
regarding getting someone else to pick it up or going into syndication.

Apparently some folk have had conversations with UPN execs, and there
is a chance that sufficient paper-mail input could influence them...

Saw another episode of Earth 2 last night; this appeared to be the
episode the _should_ have played immediately before the season finale.

It even went so far as to have trailers for the finale (two weeks ago).

NBC must really hate this series, the way they've played episodes out
of order, all the pre-emptions, etc etc... It never had a chance.

For the first time ever, I'm going to send letters (to NBC, and UPN).

Too corny. Not enough S in the SF. It might as well have been called
Earth 1. Sure there were some alien life forms but they were not much
distinguishable from boogey monsters. It verged on being just another
soapie, but with an unusual setting.
