1145.0. "Liquid Sky - a movie" by TINCUP::XAIPE::KOLBE (The Goddess in Chains) Wed Jun 02 1993 00:06

I saw an interesting B Sci-Fi film last night. It's called "Liquid Sky" and the
majority of the credits went to someone named Slava Tsonkerson, or something
close to that. It was made in 1983 and apparently did the college art film
circut.

It was definately low budget and the dialouge was often laughable. It did have
a few good moments, though the flying saucer looked suspiciously like one of
those circular flat ceiling lamps.

The main premise concerned aliens comming to earth to get their fill of the
chemicals released in human brains after the injection of heroin or the act
of having an orgasm. The main victims tended to be from the big city punk
culture. Lots of bizzare clothes and night club scenes in this flick. The main
character is a punk fashion model who is pretty much treated like garbage by a
series of men and her woman lover. The aliens land on her roof.

Comming to rescue is a German scientist who has figured all this out. Everytime
we see something through the aliens eyes the picture goes into the negative with
lots of color reversal. Looks very 60's.

The aliens have to kill those they drain the chemicals from. Somehow the model
becomes their tool and she goes about having sex with all the people that
treated her badly. Guess what happens to them???

There is no way to tell anymore without ruining the rather biazzre effect of the
movie. Some of the scenes where really interesting visually and the characters
occasionaly slipped into Film Noir style dialouge that keep me listening.

This is not a film for kids though the sex that was pictured was no more than
the night time soaps put on. It gets a lot of the feeling of decadence and lost
souls that the punk culture attracted.

The woman who played the lead also played a man. And her room mate did a
credible junkie poet bitch. Her eulogy over one of the dead was actually a bit
frightening. You could picture people who are this far gone into darkness.

Anyway, if you're in a strange mood and want something really different some
night this is worth a $3 rental. It's hokey enough to laugh at and yet thought
provoking at times. Oh, I forgot to mention there is a scene during a fashion
shoot where the various hairdressers and photographers end up acting as a Greek
chorus. Lots of close up face shots and big noses in the camera. I think these
folks were playing a bit. liesl

Well, for me the interest was that it was a Russian view of
    American life, indirectly.
