1127.0. "Time Trax (SF on TV)" by NIOMAX::LAING (Soft-Core Cuddler*Jim Laing*232-2635) Thu Jan 21 1993 12:26

Another new TV SF show - TIME TRAX - starts this week in the Boston
area (Ch 38, I've seen Wed 8pm and Sunday 8pm, so I don't know which is
the "premiere" date vs. which is the regularly-scheduled time" ...

Here's a note to discuss this show ...

I found it surprisingly good (measured against possible expectations -
I maintain high standards, but sometimes set low expectations).

The premise, for those who haven't seen the ads, is that someone
has developed a mechanism to allow time travel to a point exactly 200 years
into the past, and to allow for returns. The nefarious developer of this
technology has resorted to using it for personal gain, charging exhorbitant
fees to criminals and others who wish to escape to the past.
He sets up a web of perhaps hundreds of these people, whom he will join
at some point and take over the world of 1993. (The evil scientist
from the future turns tyrant scenario.) The hero is a dedicated cop
who follows the bad guys into the past to send them back to the future.

The show is a simple cops-and-robbers chase.
The effects are low key and not the point of the show.
The science fiction aspects are muted but central.
The hero has a credit card sized (AT&T Master Card, really! "promotional
consideration provided by AT&T" is in the credits) supercomputer
with holographic projector as a sidekick. She (anthropomorphized)
knows everything. He's got a stun ray, martial arts training, and
enhanced human capabilities (quick healing, 204 IQ, 35 beats per minute
heart rate, 3:38 time in the mile).

All in all, I expect it's going to be about as good as Highlander.

Time Trax has been released for video hire in the UK. Hired it
thinking it was a stand alone film only to be presented with the
annoying "I think I'll stay and right the wrongs of this century
while continuing to hunt down the bad guys..." ending - blah!

He's got all that and he still got stuck in this dog?

I give the show a perfect 5 on the Honk-O-meter.

Episode Synopses (Dates are week of)

First Season

A Stranger In Time (1/20/93)

After the assassin of the UN Secretary General, Sepp Dietrich, disappears
from police custody, Captain Darien Lambert learns that Nobel Prize
winner Mordicai Sahmbi has been transporting fugitives back to the 20th
century with his time machine. Before he is able to apprehend Sahmbi
though, Sahmbi murders his assistant Elyssa (whom Darien was in love with),
and escapes to the past. Darien pursues Sahmbi and the other fugitives,
and return the escaped fugitives. After his arrival, he meets Secret
Service agent Annie Knox (who looks exactly like Elyssa). Darien stops
Dietrich from assassinating the President. After a lengthy chase during
which Dietrich's partner is killed, Darien confronts Dietrich atop a
waterfall. Deitrch tells him he has already been exposed to TXP twice.
Darien doesn't care and shoots him with a TXP pellet. Dietrich falls off
the waterfall, and appears to be transported.

To Kill A Billionare (2/01/93)

Sahmbdi begins transporting nuclear waste into the future, where there is
no way to dispose of it. Darien learns Sahmbi's location and attempts
to send him back, but is captured. Before he is killed, Annie Knox rescues
him. Sahmbi is taken to court to stop his procedure. The judge turns out
to be a fugitive from the future also. He does stop Sahmbi from performing
his procedures any more. Sahmbi escapes from the courtroom during an attack
on the judge, which fails. Darien allows the judge to remain in the past.

Fire And Ice (2/08/93)

Darien pursues a pair of jewel thieves in Texas, one of whom is from the
future. He eventually sends both of them to the future. A brief appearance
is made by Sahmbi (he needs to raise money and blackmails the pair).

Showdown (2/15/93)

During a trip west, Darien helps an aging US Marshal capture a fugitive from
this time. The Marshal (whom Darien comes to respect greatly) is revealed
to be a fugitive from the future. Darien decides to send him back when
they catch the fugitive they are tracking, but the Marshal is killed by
the fugitive. Darien arrests the fugitive (the Marshal deputized him), and
buries his friend.

The Prodigy (2/22/93)

After seeing a news broadcast of a school track meet that broke a world
record (that was previously not broken until far in the future), Darien
investigates. He learns that a fugitive from the future (a bank robber)
kidnapped his son before coming to the past. The fugitive is killed, and
Darien returns the son to his mother in the future.

Death Takes A Holiday (3/01/93)

Darien goes to New Orleans on the trail of a criminal he had pursued in the
future. The criminal's main tactic was to kill the family of his
competitors, a tactic which attracts Darien's attention when a mob boss's
daughter is killed in New Orleans. Darien learns that he has addicted his
assistant to a drug from the future which has no cure in the present. After
saving the life of the son of the mob boss, they help him capture the
criminal, whom Darien gives to the family. He sends the assistant to
the future for medical treatment, without which she will die.

The Contender (3/08/93)

Darien is contacted by the janitor of TRAX who has come from the future
to find his son, a boxer whom Sahmbi returned after boxing was outlawed
after several deaths. Darien is forced to enter the ring against him
to prevent him from accidently killing another boxer (the world champion).
He returns both to the future.

Night Of The Savage (3/15/93)

Darien is contacted by a fugitive in London. He arrives there to find
her dead. He learns that she is the latest victim of the Savage, a serial
killer stalking London. Darien realizes he is using a device from the
future to kill. Darien falls under suspicion of being the Savage, but
learns that one of the policemen investigating the crimes is the Savage.
The Savage is killed during a fight with Darien.

Treasure Of The Ages (3/29/93)

Darien goes to the Florida Keys to track down a fugitive. He arrives just
before the onset of a hurricane. The fugitive is attempting to locate
a treasure ship off the coast that is found in the future. Darien
is trapped by the hurricane in a hotel with the fugitive and his pregnant
wife (not from the future). The fugitive holds them prisoner until Darien
is able to escape and return him to the future.  {Eddie Albert guest stars}

The Price Of Honor (4/05/93)

A fugitive blackmails the Secretary of State, a man who will be one of the
future's greatest Presidents, with information on his illegitamate son
(gained from his autobiography written after he left office). Darien
helps him stop the blackmailer, who is killed.

Face Of Death (4/12/93)

Darien goes to South America after a copkiller from the future. He is unable
to identify him as the fugitive has had plastic surgery. He narrows it down
to four men on an expedition into the jungle. Darien joins the expedition,
which discovers a temple in the jungle. After killing one of the members,
the fugitive is revealed to be the tour leader, who is after the treasure
in the temple. Darien sends him back to the future.

Revenge (5/03/93)

After seeing a report from Hawaii on a recent hate crime, Darien notices the
symbol used by the group is from the future. Darien goes to Hawaii and
talks with the reporter about the attack. During another attack, Darien
sees the group's leader, who appears to be an aged Sepp Dietrich. They
track the group down to a deserted island. Darien is captured by the group
after the reporter turns out to be a traitor. The leader of the group
is in fact Dietrich, who after enduring much pain, awoke on the island
with his present appearance. Darien escapes while Dietrich murders the
reporter. Dietrich finds him and threatens to shoot him with TXP until
he finds how many will kill him, but Selma constructs a shield which
protects Darien. Dietrich flees the island.

Darien Comes Home (5/10/93)

Darien goes to Chicago (his hometown) to track down two computer hackers
from the future, who are attempting to break into the Federal Reserve.
After a helicopter chase, one of the brothers is killed and the other
is returned to the future.

Two Beans in a Wheel (5/17/93)

A policewoman from the future comes back to help Darien capture Sahmbi.
She tells him Sahmbi is attempting to locate the Holy Grail, which was
briefly found in this time, and then disappeared. They track the Grail
down to a monastery, but the cop turns out to be working for Sahmbi, who
forces the abbot to take them to the Grail. The cop changes sides, but
Sahmbi escapes again. The abbot is sent to the future with the Grail
to attempt to bring peace to the Middle East.

Little Boy Lost (5/24/93)

Darien is alerted by Selma to a rescue signal being emmitted by a device
from their time. Darien investigates. He finds his former West Point
teacher in the hospital. He tells him he was camping with his foster son,
a deaf boy, when he was injured. The boy is still up in the mountains.
Darien takes a helicopter to the site of the boy (from the signal), but
the helicopter crashes, injuring Darien. Darien rescues the boy (with
much help from Selma), and leaves his professor in the past.

Mysterious Stranger (10/25/93)

Darien goes after a drug dealer in Mexico, but first he is forced
to deal with an actor from the future, who keeps appearing at the wrong
time, causing Darien many problems. After the actor is rendered
unconscious, Darien takes care of the fugitive, then allows the actor
to remain in the present.

Framed (11/01/93)

Darien is framed for the murder of an ISA agent. He teams up with
Tulsa Giles, a member of a government accounting office (who wants
to join the ISA). They uncover a plot to kill the head of the ISA.
Darien is being set up to take the blame for the murder. The assistant
head of the ISA, Charly Burke, is revealed to be a fugitive
(he also appeared in the pilot). The head of the ISA is killed, but
Burke is arrested for the murder. He goes to a prison run by another
fugitive (of whom Darien is still unaware of).

Beautiful Songbird (11/08/93)

Darien attempts to save the life of a country singer from a jealous fan
from the future. The singer is destined to become the most popular
country star ever.  {John DeLancie (Q from STTNG) guest stars}

Photo Finish (11/15/93)

Darien goes to Australia after a racehorse that is supposed to not ever
lose a race loses one. He discovers two fugitives involved in implanting
devices in horses to increase their stamina and strength (and kills them
quickly). One is killed and the other is returned to the future.

Darrow For The Defense (11/22/93)

Darrow, a lawyer from the future once involved with Darien, comes to
the past to return one of the fugitives who has been exorerated. Darien
assists her in finding the fugitive, but the fugitive is working with
Sahmbdi, who is attempting to take over a Science Insitutite. The
two are trapped by Sahmbi's men, but Darien escapes and returns the fugitive
(who did commit the crime in the future). Sahmbi escapes from Darien again.
Darrow returns to the future.

One On One (11/29/93)

Sahmbi captures Darien and exposes him to a TXP derivative, which
allows him to slowly control Darien's mind. After Darien attempts
to escape, the two are trapped in a mine shaft (the same one from the
second episode). Darien attempts to reach Sahmbi, while fighting off
Sahmbi's influence. After Sahmbi tries to make Darien jump down a mine
shaft, Darien breaks free of his control and Sahmbi is arrested by the
police.

Second Season

Return Of The Yazuka (1/24/94)

A leader of the Yazuka from the future attempts to have Darien killed
(Darien was the one who captured him in the future). Darien travels to
Japan to stop him from taking over the Yazuka. With the aid of an undercover
policewoman in his organization, he tracks him down to a conference with
the other Yazuka leaders. Darien convinces the other leaders that there
is no honor in following the fugitive, and after defeating him, he
sends him back.

Missing (1/31/94)

Late one night, Darien is robbed while making a withdrawal at a bank.
The theives take his wallet (containing his badge and Selma). With
the help of another policeman, Darien tracks the thieves, who use
his badge to pull off a million-dollar robbery at a hotel. After
arriving at the hotel, Darien stops the thieves and rescues Selma (who
had been thrown into a fire!)

To Live & Die In Docker Flats (2/7/94)

Darien goes to Docker Flats to try to locate a fugitive. The people in
the town claim that they don't know anything about him, even when Darien
discovers evidence that they were there. He finds the grave of the fugitive
along with another couple at their house a few miles from town. Darien
learns that the man controlling the village had them killed when the fugitive
recognized him as another fugitive from the future and tried to blackmail
him. Darien recruits some help from the town, and arrests him. He leaves
him in the past.

A Close Encounter (2/14/94)

Selma alerts Darien to the presence of an alien ship crashing on Earth.
The aliens are not supposed to be encounted by Earth until Darien's time.
Darien goes to the site of the crash, and rescues the alien from a group
out to kill it (it attacked the sheriff's brother in self-defense). He
learns it came to rescue its mate, who is living in the town. After
getting both of them, he sends them to the future, since there is no
way they can contact their planet in this time.

The Gravity Of It All (2/21/94)

Darien finds the inventor of an anti-gravity belt living in the past.
The inventor has perfected the belt, which had serious problems in the
future. Darien tries out the belt. After Darien leaves, the scientist
is kidnapped by a terrorist who wants the belt for himself. Using the
earlier version of the belt, Darien rescues the scientist, and uses the
belt to help them escape (it was prone to explode upon sharp impacts).
The terrorist pursues them in the other belt. Darien shoots him with
a pellet and he crashes, causing the belt to explode. Darien allows the
scientist to remain in the present, on condition that he not create
any device from the future.

Happy Valley (2/28/94)

Tulsa Giles reappears after she has become a member of the ISA. She
persuades Darien to help her with a case she is working on concerning
Happy Valley, a real estate development. They pose as husband and wife
and purchase a house there (Tulsa uses Darien's bank account),
discovering a clause in the contract that reverts the ownership
back to Happy Valley if they leave within two years. Darien discovers
that a fugitive is driving the homeowners crazy with his device, which
he uses on Tulsa. She tries to kill Darien, thinking he is trying to
murder her. Darien finds the fugitive and sends him back.

Lethal Weapons (3/07/94)

After a armored car heist (done with a weapon from the future) fails,
Darien investigates. The two criminals are from the present and purchased
the device, but the one the purchased it was killed when the truck exploded,
due to misuse of the weapon. Darien learns the supplier is a scientist from
the future who killed a friend of his with a device called a "boomer".
Darien tracks him down to an isolated island covered with security devices.
After sending his accomplace back (and taking his boomer), he confronts
the scientist who attempts to kill him. Darien is forced to use the boomer
on him, killing him. Darien learns he has sold several weapons to criminals
in this time period, which expands Darien's mission in the past.

The Cure (3/14/94)

Darien confronts an Australian football coach who is a fugitive from
the future. When he is about to send him back, the coach tells him
he has been exposed to TXP twice already. He attempts to flee, but
soon falls down, dead. Darien learns he was a patient at an Australian
clinic that claims to cure fatal diseases. He finds that the clinic
is run by Sahmbi, who uses TXP to cure the patient, which does cure them,
but soon kills them anyway. Darien is captured, but escapes with the aid
of Sahmbi's assistant, who came to Sahmbi for treatment. Sahmdi escapes
from Darien again. Darien tells the assistant that a cure has just been
found for her disease.

Perfect Pair (4/18/94)

Darien's partner from the future, who likes breaking the rules, returns to
help him catch a corrupt police chief from the future, who framed him in
the future when he worked for him. He brings his own hologram, Cindi, with
him. They meet with a detective who has been kicked off the police
force, who tells them that the chief is planning to kill the governor.
The parner is captured after trying to kidnap the police chief. With
the aid of Selma (who reveals that she can both change appearance, to Cindi,
and can appear solid), Darien breaks into the police station and rescues
his partner. The police chief is sent back to the future after Darien
stops his partner from killing him. Before he can send him back also,
he steals Darien's motorcycle and rides off with it.

Catch Me If You Can (4/25/94)

Darien goes after a criminal who escaped from him in the future after
stealing his weapon. Selma comments that he has spent the most time
tracking this one fugitive. He frames Darien for the robberies he is
committing, but Darien is released quickly after another robbery is
committed. After a final bank robbery committed with a helicopter
(during which they take the shotgun of the sheriff helping Darien)
the criminal and his accomplice plan to go to the Bahamas and forget
about Darien, but run out of fuel very quickly. Darien and the sheriff
track the pair down and capture them, recovering both weapons. Darien
leaves the criminal in this time.

The Dream Team (5/02/94)

Darien comes to the aid of Trey Hawkins, a former NBA star who has
become a priest. A hitman, who confessed to Hawkins when he was on
death row, is released from prison pending a new trial. He plans to
kill Hawkins to eliminate the only person who can put him in jail.
Darien guards Hawkins after an attempt is made on his life (after
a basketball game with Darien). They believe it is to do with Hawkins's
work in stopping gang violence. After another attempt is made with a
futurisic weapon, Darien wonders how it came to be in their possession
(ignoring Selma's request to review a file that would have told him how).
Hawkins is contacted by the hitman who wants him to hear his confession.
Hawkins agrees to meet him at the Sports Arena alone. Darien finds out
that the hitman is from the future, and races to the Arena. He prevents
the hitman from killing Hawkins, and sends him back. Later, he participates
in a charity basketball tournament with Hawkins.  {Julius Erving guest stars}

Almost Human (5/09/94)

Sahmbi creates an android that looks exactly like Darien programmed to kill
Darien and take his place (so no one else will come after him). Sahmbi
tricks a fugitive Darien has been tracking to come out into the open as
bait for Darien. After Darien returns the fugitive, he is attacked by the
android, who later follows Darien back to his hotel. After considering
several possibilities, Darien decides that his attacker must be an
android. Later that night, Darien is again attacked by the android. A
shot with a pellet momentarily stops the android, but not for long (it
does knock out the video link to Sahmbi). The android knocks Darien out.
Darien awakes to find the android standing over him. It wishes to study
him before fulfilling its mission. Darien has Selma appear (she receives
several pellets from the android!) and tell the android about Sahmbi
(clips are from the pilot episode). Sahmbi tracks the pair down and orders
the android to kill Darien. They fight and android falls over a cliff.
Sahmbi tells Darien (who he thinks is the android) to dispose of the
body and return later. After Sahmbi leaves, Darien brings the android back
to his room. With Selma's help, he fixes the android and asks it for
Sahmbi's location. Sahmbi is watching through the video link and tells
the android to give Darien the location. Darien arrives at Sahmbi's lab
and makes his way into Sahmbi easily. Before he can send Sahmbi back,
Sahmbi's guard captures him. The android appears and stops the guard, but
is killed. Sahmbi escapes again. The android tells Darien it had been an
honor to have been somewhat like him. Later, Darien tells Selma of a wish
he had made for a brother, which came true for a short time (Selma asks
if he would settle for a sister!).

Mother (5/16/94)

A fugitive asks his ex-wife to help him escape from Darien to make up
for helping her escape from the future. When Darien arrives at Albert
Logan's apartment, he is interrupted by three men who chase him. Darien
tracks the fugitive to the orphanage where he grew up. He finds Kathryn
Logan (who resembles Selma greatly), who denies having seen Albert lately.
After Darien leaves, she watches a recording of Darien growing up. Darien
follows her to her ex-husband. He shoots Darien but Kathryn hits his hand
and the bullet only grazes Darien's forehead. He sends Logan back and passes
out. Kathryn takes him back to her house, and tries to save his life.
When Kathryn prays for her son's life, Selma reveals her presence and
tells her about Darien. Kathryn tells her that she left Darien because
she could not give Darien a good life. Kathryn tells Selma not to reveal
who she is to Darien. When Darien wakes up, Selma is evasive about who
Kathryn is (Darien realizes he had a transfusion which must come from
someone else from the future). From this and several other clues, Darien
realizes that Kathryn is his mother. He becomes angry when he confronts
her and she denies that she is his mother. He storms out of the house,
saying he hates her. The three men from Logan's apartment arrive to search
for a disk Logan stole from them. They find the disk just as Darien comes
to retrieve Selma. With Selma's help, they stop two of the men but the other
flees outside. Darien pursues but comes under fire from the driver of the
car they came in. Kathryn appears and shoots the driver, but is also hit.
Darien stops the other man and finds Kathryn dying of the gunshot. She
reveals who she is and that Darien's father was also a cop. She asks Selma
to protect Darien, then dies after Darien tells her he forgives her. Darien
later visits her grave. Her tombstone reads
              "Kathryn Lambert 2141-1994 Beloved Mother"

The Last MIA (5/23/94)

While tracking a fugitive, Darien is shot in the shoulder and falls off a
catwalk (the fugitive is sent back). A guard who was watching Darien
takes him home and removes the bullet. He asks Darien to help him find
his son, a POW in Cambodia (he noted Darien's physical ability). Darien
initially refuses, but after Selma tells him the prisoner will be executed
in a few days after a ransom demand is paid, he agrees to help (with the
stipulation that no questions are asked about him). In Thailand,
they meet with the owner of a bar who knows where the son is being held.
Before they can get the information, the man is killed on orders from the
leader of the camp holding the son. Darien meets with the former head
of the NVA army in that area. The man is dying and Selma tells Darien
that in a few months, he will reveal all the information he knows about
MIA's. Darien convinces him to give them the location of the camp. They
take a boat upriver to the camp, but the boat is blown up by a patrol
boat. They swim ashore and make their way to the camp with very little
time remaining before the ransom will be paid. Darien has Selma make
a diversion (sounds of a firefight) at one end of the camp, while he sneaks
in and rescues the son. They retreat to the dock, where the father is
shot by the head of the camp. The son shoots him with the gun from the
patrol boat, which they leave on. After they cross the border, Darien
leaves them after telling thanking them for showing him what it means
to be a father and to have a son.

Since the last reply was last year I know not to many of
you were interested in this show but I was. Does anyone know if it
still airs in the Leominster, MA area or has it been canceled? I don't
believe I missed 2 of the last shows from last year. I missed the one
with his mother Jeesh. It seems since UPN came into being Trax has
been gone. I miss my weekly laugh fest. I just loved Selma.

Yep, it is still showing *here*. (-:
(I don't watch regularly. It was showing as of a few weeks ago.)

>I just loved Selma.

Yep. The banter between Selma and her "boss" is dry but amusing.
