998.0. "Demons at Rainbow Bridge by Chalker" by TNPUBS::HALLOWELL (It's been a slow decade.) Tue Jul 16 1991 11:37

Has anyone read _The_Demons_at_Rainbow_Bridge_ by Jack Chalker? More
importantly, does anyone have any information about the sequel?

'Demons' was one of the best SF books I've read, and I try to read quite a bit.
The setup for the book is straightforward enough - three distinct empires
inhabit known space in a "cold war" type of existence. When some strange
creatures are discovered on a remote planet at the corner of all three empires,
a team of explorers/adventurers/conquerors is sent, one from each super-power.

This first book primarily serves to introduce the members of each team by
having them go through a (mis)adventure in their own empire. The teams are
called to investigate the "demons" only near the end.

Any news on the sequel would be much appreciated.

       I'm awaiting the sequel too.

However, Chalker's books while being somewhat interesting and
entertaining and really not worth much more than the paper they're
written on. If you've ever read any of his other series they're so
similar in theme that except for slight variations I wonder why I read
them. (But I do like the variations, so I find myself reading them.
It's better than reading computer books, but I don't know how I'll go
back after finishing the Thomas Covenant series again...)

So far it *does* sound like "Four Lords of the Diamond meets Nathan
Brazil and the Well World", with a small dose of Five Rings of the
    Master mixed in.

The sequel is out.. It has been for a couple of months.. I got a copy at a
B. Daltons in Atlanta at decus. It is hardback.. I haven't read it yet though
because I keep puting books infront of it in my 'to read' pile..

Can you pass on a title? All of the bookstores I've tried don't have it
and have no record of what it might be called.

    Thanks,
