989.0. "_Fool on the Hill_ by Matt Ruff" by LABRYS::CONNELLY (Television must be destroyed!) Thu Jun 13 1991 02:47

Has anyone else read Matt Ruff's _Fool on the Hill_? I'm about 100 pages
into it now and it seems...interesting. Almost like a fantasy as it might
have been written by Richard Farina, if he was still alive.

I found it enjoyable - especially since I went to Cornell, and thus
had an inside feel for it. It is a fantasy, although it's not
labelled as such (I believe it's thrown in the general "fiction"
category by the publisher). Definitely worth a read, IMHO.

Brief synopsis: Fool on the Hill is a story about a young writer who
has chosen to stay on in the city where he went to college, how he
finds love, and his struggle against a growing inhuman evil. The cast
includes students at the college (his friends and acquaintances), the
dogs who roam the college, a race of fairies who also use the campus as
their school & home, two Ithacops, the ocassional appearance by a
heavenly being, a succubi of a less-destructive nature, and many, many
    more.
