| One of the things you are going to have to remember, Debbie, is that
while something may work in one area, it will fall flat in another.
For example, northeast conventions seem to be heavy on the programming,
discussions, panel aspect, while southeastern conventions emphasize the
fan having a good time (must be that "Southern Hospitality") while
western conventions run on their own track.
What do I like to see at a convention:
1. An accessable GoH. Nothing irks me more than a guest that hides in
his room when he isn't involved in programming and doesn't mingle with
the fans in general.
2. A really great art show with a lot of diverse styles of hanging and
3D artwork. Make certain that this is a mix of professional and
amateur artwork with a good mix of SF/Fantasy/Media/Humor.
3. A well stocked dealer/huxter room. There have been SF conventions
I have been to that the dealers' room only contains comic book
dealers. The ConCom has got to understand that fans tend to want new
things. The head dealer has got to look.
4. Refreshments of some type. I'm not a drinker, but I think the filk
song "I'm Only Here For The Bheer" speaks for itself.
5. A well organized registration staff. When I pre-register for a
convention, I expect my badge to be ready when I get there and I don't
want to have to stand in line for it.
6. A non-obtrusive convention security staff. If I wanted
storm-troopers...
These are just a few things off the top of my head that I look for at a
con. I have been going to cons for 13 years and have been on the
ConCom of ChattaCon, a 1400 person SF/Fantasy convention (plug), for
the past six. I think I know from whence I speak.

RE -.1
Thanks for the info!! :-)
Exactly what I was looking for!!
Keep it coming, folks! :-)
A little more info on the convention as I know right now. The guest
of honor is in deep discussion as we "speak". Possiblilities are
Patrick Stewart, Brent Spiner and John Delancie (Q), one or more
may possibly attend. (no definites, so please don't hold me to it:-))
This Con is for a good cause as it is to help the local Make-a-Wish
chapter. (I am not affiliated with it, this is a disclaimer)
I do know that someone from Conn. is organizing the Con who has
had experience in doing this type of thing. But they still want
some input to make this the best ever!
Oh, about security...the last I heard, there's a group of Klingons
wearing phasers massing at the border! :-) ;-)
Again, thanks for the info and I would appreciate more.
