915.5They've lost a publisher...VSSCAD::SIGELTue Feb 11 1992 15:397
Re .4

How seriously can you take a list which claims to have lost
the entire editorial staff of DAW books? (Wollheim, Gilbert,
and Stampfel). Surely that address is a matter of public record?

				Andrew
915.6OASS::MDILLSONGeneric Personal NameTue Feb 11 1992 19:5811
I believe that DAW has moved its offices to 375 Hudson Street in New
York from its old address. I believe this would account for the
    discrepency.

As far as how seriously to take a list, I have to spend hundreds of
dollars every year to run my convention's mailing list through USPS
NCOA/NIXIE listings to get the changes of addresses for my mailings.
It really is not that easy a task and I only have about 15000 names. I
imagine WorldCon has quite a few more.

    Cut 'em some slack.

    re:.6

The only problem with "cutting them some slack" in the stated
instance is that is would likely only take a phone call to Charlie
Brown at LOCUS or Andy Porter at SCIENCE FICTION CHRONICLE to
    get the correct addresses.

915.8A DAWnting DisappearanceVSSCAD::SIGELWed Feb 19 1992 20:3616
Re: .6 & .7

Considering that DAW is likely going to advertise in the convention
publications, and MagiCon could probably use the revenue, it just
isn't a good idea to lose all the DAW personnel.

Personally, I favor a call to directory assistance in New York,
and then calling the DAW offices directly -- both Charlie and Andy
have been known to get the facts wrong, but a direct call is likely
to work best.

(What I find most odd about this is that mail for DAW would not be
forwarded, or that address correction would not be sent back to
MagiCon. Surely a publisher wants to get all its mail?)

An COA form was probably submitted, but these last a limited period of
time. Possibly the order on file has expired.

Special Art Retrospective

Guest of Honor Vincent Di Fate, and Robert Reed, the co-curator of the
American Society of Illustrators, are working with MagiCon to present a
major exhibit of historic speculative art. The exhibition covers the period
1870--1970. As Di Fate explains, "We want to focus on artists whose names
might not be familiar to science fiction fans, but whose art definitely is."
Art collectors and museums from all over America are lending their art for
this show.

The Retrospective will feature paintings by diverse artists ranging from
Charles R. Knight, the paleontologist who created the earliest scientific
paintings of dinosaurs a hundred years ago, to Jack Davis, the designer who
created poster art for movies like It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, World and
whose controversial comic art led to the establishment of the Comics Code.
The Retrospective will be in the Orange County Convention Center, and will
be open during the same hours as the Art Show. Detailed information about
the Retrospective will appear in a press release this summer.

MagiCon to Host Astronaut John Young at a Special Luncheon

Commander John W. Young, an astronaut on Apollo 16 and on the maiden voyage
of the space shuttle Columbia, will be the keynote speaker after a banquet
at noon on Friday, September 4. Young will speak about his experiences in
NASA.

The lunch will consist of chicken, salad, vegetables, beverage, and desert;
a vegetarian entree will also be available. Tickets are $16.50, which
includes tax and gratuity. If you wish to attend, send your name, your
entree selection, and $16.50 for each ticket to MagiCon Luncheon, PO Box
52545, Philadelphia, PA 19115. You may make reservations for a complete
table when you purchase your ticket.

There will also be a lunch with the Hugo nominees on Saturday. Details
about this lunch will appear in the next Progress Report; the tickets for
this event will be sold at the convention.

In speaking to Vincent Di Fate the other day, he noted two errors in the last
MagiCon press release:

The other person coordinating the Art Retrospective is named Roger Reed, not
Robert Reed. And the group they both belong to is named the Society of
Illustrators, not the American Society of Illustrators. Sorry about that.

I'm currently working on the BIG press release (that goes to mundane press
outlets), and on a press release on the Art Retrospective Di Fate and Reed are
organizing. I'll post them here next week.

Fellow fen,

On September 3, 1992, MagiCon - The 50th WorldCon will open in a way
no other WorldCon has before - with a multimedia stage production and
presentation.

I am looking for people who are planning to be at MagiCon who would like
to play a part in this production. Although the major characters of the
play have been cast, small cameo roles are still open.

Among these roles include cameo "appearences" by:

     Jules Verne
     H.G. Wells
A reporter for the Chicago Sun-Times
     (4) generically costumed fans
     (3) "aliens" (evil-looking alien costumes)

If you are interested in portraying one of these parts, please contact me
ASAP. Since talent rehearsals are scheduled for mid-August, and I live
in the Boston area, it would be helpful (but not required) that people from
the New England area respond. If you know of people who do not have USENet
(news) access, please pass this announcement along to them.

Those who would wish to perform in any of these roles, please be advised:
it would be tremendously helpful if you could assist in the provision of
your own costume. Also, you must be coming into Orlando no later than
Wednesday night (September 2nd). The rehearsals for this production with
all technical elements (sound, light, slides, projection video) will take
place Thursday morning and afternoon before the performance.

Thank you, and I look forward to seeing as many of you as I can at
the convention.

Jim Belfiore
Director of Opening Ceremonies

The Hugo winners were announced Saturday night at MagiCon. The results
were posted to the commercial networks immediately thereafter, but it's
not clear that they were ever posted on USENET. The winners are:

Best Novel: Barrayar by Lois McMaster Bujold (Analog, July-October 1991 and
                   Baen Books)
Best Novella: "Beggars in Spain" by Nancy Kress (Axolotl Press and Asimov's,
                   April 1991)
Best Novellette: "Gold" by Isaac Asimov (Analog, September 1991)
Best Short Story: "A Walk in the Sun" by Geoffrey A. Landis (Asimov's,
                   October 1991)
Best Non-Fiction Book: The World of Charles Addams by Charles Addams (Knopf)
Best Original Artwork: Cover of The Summer Queen by Michael Whelan (Warner
                   Questar)
Best Dramatic Presentation: Terminator 2 (Carolco)
Best Professional Editor: Gardner Dozois
Best Professional Artist: Michael Whelan
Best Semiprozine: Locus (Charles N. Brown, PO Box 13305, Oakland, CA 94661)
Best Fanzine: Mimosa (Dick & Nicki Lynch, PO Box 1350, Germantown, MD 20875)
Best Fan Writer: Dave Langford
Best Fan Artist: Brad Foster
Campbell Award (Sponsored by Dell Publications): Ted Chiang

Spider Robinson MC'ed the awards event. Forrey Ackerman presented the
Big Heart Award, which went to Samanda Jeude, one of the founders of
Electrical Eggs. A slide show retrospective of history of the Hugo
Awards, assembled by the team of Scott Robinson and Sally Martin,
rounded out the evening.

Florida artist Phil Tortorici, working in conjunction with MagiCon chair
Joe Siclari, created a very special Hugo design, to visualize the
convention's theme "Where the magic of imagination meets the techonology
of space." The gold-plated rocket appears against a starry background.
It rests atop a small piece of the metal grid taken from the gantry of
Launch Complex 26 at Cape Canaveral. (Stepping out of my role of
"MagiCon Press Relations," and into my role as long-time fan, this Hugo
statue blows any prior Hugo statue out of the water. Phil, Joe, Peter
Weston (the metal-working fan who produced the rockets) and anyone else
who had anything to do with the design of the award set a very high
standard here, one unlikely to be surpassed any time soon. Congratulations!)

About 5,500 fans attended MagiCon.

A number of charitable auctions were held. About $950 was raised for
the Effinger Fund. Auctions for AIDS research & care, TAFF-DUFF, and
Terry's Dream (a fund to bring more foreign fans to Con Francisco) were
also held. Additionally, about $400 to benefit Hurricane Andrew
survivors was collected at the Information Booth.

The convention generally ran quite smoothly. The Orlando/Orange County
Convention/Civic Center was a very large facility, giving fen plenty of
space to spread out in. The parties were plentiful, and the suites in
the Peabody ranged from large to absolutely amazing.

Many fen praised the excellent costumes they saw at the Masquerade, and
it is generally believed that the Masquerade was the best-ever in terms
of costume-quality.

More to come, once I dig out more of my records!

Only 412 ballots cast for Best Novel? Out of the X thousand
people who attended the Worldcon? I know voter turnout is low in
America but this seems extreme! Is it typical for so few votes
    to be cast? /jlr
