795.0. "The Philadelphia Experiment" by HAGGIS::IRVINE (I hate Boomer .008 Guage!) Fri Jun 02 1989 08:42

    HAs anyone got any opinions on the film "The Philidelphia Experiment".

    I rented the film last night and although I new the bases of the
    story, one part of the film left me with a question.

    SPOILER ALERT

    When the ship re-materialised, a number of the crew were depicted
    as being "merged" with the infrastructure of the ship. If the ship
    it'self came back without any distortion, why did members of the
    crew materialise as part of the infrastructure?

    If this was the case, then the re-assembly of the atoms of the ship
    should not have resulted with the crew being part of the ship as
    they were not part of the origonal pattern.

    Read extra special-effects and gross-out potential for teen audience.
    Problem has no basis in known physics, but, how many movies follow
    the rules of science?
795.2Bad book, worse movie...EDCS::WRIGHTand miles to go before I sleep.Fri Jun 02 1989 16:1912
    The movie is based on a book by the same name.

    I've watched the movie and read the book.

    The books better, which is not saying much. The authors from what
    I remember (yes it was written by 2 people) went into a fair
    description of why the men were stuck into the ship...

    THE PHILADELPHIA EXPERIMENT (Project Invisibility) was written
    by W.L. Moore and Charles (Triangle) Berlitz. It takes the
    "known" facts about the project and speculates a lot. The movie
    is Hollywood's version.

    I liked the movie--not destined to be a classic but it kept my
    interest. Typical SF theme--an ordinary man in extraordinary
    circumstances. (True, the hero got a lot farther than he should
    have, but that's typical H-wood. What didn't you like about it?

795.4The book is nothing like the movie!...TADSKI::WAINELindaWed Jun 07 1989 16:5514

    The movie was very loosely based on the book. The book was NOT
    about the adventures of one of the sailors projected in time,
    but presented information in an attempt to prove that the experiment
    did occur...

    I personally liked the book....thought it was interesting. I had
    discussed this incident about 10 years ago with a couple of physicists
    (I was in college, majoring in physics) and asked their opinion
    of the book. One of the physicists, who had met Einstein, believed
    that the incident did occur and that Einstein had destoyed a lot
    of his work because he felt that mankind was not ready for it....

      Did anybody notice in the movie, when the hero was watching TV in the
    hotel room, there was a commercial for the Digital Rainbow, with TWO
    mocro-processors! I got a real kick out of that. Sorry, back to the
    real topic.
