790.0. "UK SF Bookshops" by IOSG::LAWM (Mathew Law (only *one* T), Reading UK) Mon May 15 1989 09:46

I thought it might be useful to make a list of SF bookshops
in the UK, as they seem to be less easy to find than on the other
side of the water. Please add to the list if you can.

Forbidden Planet - good range, but the London branch has lost some
of its atmosphere since moving to new premises

	Branches at:

	71 New Oxford Street, London WC1A 1DG.
	29 Sydney Street, Brighton, Sussex, BN1 4EP.
	60 Burleigh Street, Cambridge, CB1 1DJ.
	168 Buchanan Street, Glasgow, G1 2LW.
7 Deer Walk, Specialist Arcade, Central Milton Keynes, MK9 3AB.
	Timeslip, 17 Prudhoe Place, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, NE1 7PE.
Forbidden Planet Mail Order, PO Box 378, London E3 4RD.

Fantasy Inn - excellent selection of used/bargain books

17 Charing Cross Road, London WC2H 0EP. (Underneath the `Book Inn').

Other places in London with a fair selection are:

Dillons, Malet Street (near to Goodge Street tube station)
Books Etc., Charing Cross Road (near Tottenham Court Road tube station)

	That's all for now!

Did "Dark They were and Golden eyed" (hell of a name for a store...
hate to answer the phone there) never re-open ???

DTWAGE closed a few years back (when I lived in London) but there
were rumors that it would come back one day.. did it ever make it??

    Dillons - Oxford
    The Paperback Shop - Oxford

Both of these have a reasonable selection on F/SF. The Paperback
Shop also has FRPG stuff, comics and the like.

Oxford also has a comic shop (on the Cowley Road), but I can't remeber
    the name.

Any idea where it might be? How big was it? This wouldn't have
been in the 1970s would it? (The name of the shop inspires images
of people who may have been overindulgent on the substance known
as lysergic acid diethylamide... :-) )

>	Any idea where it might be?
Well is _was_ in Soho (not SoHo ;-) just up from the Marque
It was just down from the Blue Posts pub... then it closed for a
while and then re-opened (by the Marque club)

How big was it?
two 1/2 floors, comics down stairs... books on ground level and
records on the 1/5 level.... very good selection of comics
and books (lots of 'rare' volumes)

> (The name of the shop inspires images

The name is from a Ray Bradbury story... but it was that sort of place

Like I said it closed some time back but it did that before and then
re-opened

It was in St. Anne's Court, which was a alley with Wardour St.
on one side... Had lots of atmosphere... Didn't the guy who
opened Forbidden Planet used to work there?

    Regards.

Yep I remember the one at St.Annes Court. It was never as good
as the previous shop in Berwick St, just by the market.

Does anyone know if the Compendium book shops still exist in
	Camden Town ?

Also for you occult freaks there was a great bookshop in
Museum Street, just opposite the British Museum.

According to someone on SF-LOVERS, the Forever People store is
located at 59 Park Street in Bristol, telephone (0272) 25454. They
add that FP has a good selection of SF books, comics, magazines, etc.

Despite the recent apathy regarding SF in the UK from some
broadcasting quarters, there has been a surprising number of
successes too, both now and from the past.

This list is dedicated to the Science Fiction and Fantasy that the UK
has given us! There are many gems from many years, quite a few of
which are being repeated even now!

Some SF shows that could be discussed are: Blakes Seven, Hitch-Hikers
Guide To The Galaxy, Star Cops, Sapphire And Steel, Thunderbirds,
Captain Scarlet, The Tomorrow People, Space 1999, Survivors, Adam
Adamant, The Prisoner, Day Of The Triffids, ...

Please note that there are two lists already for Dr Who (drwho-l) and
Red Dwarf (reddwarf), both available from this list server.
