659.0. "CASCA: The Eternal Mercenary" by BSS::EAGER () Fri Jul 29 1988 18:23

    	I have just been introduced to a new "SAGA" series called
    "CASCA". It is about a Roman soldier who is among the squad
    assigned the task of crucifing Jesus and the two thieves. In
    order to shorten the time they have to remain on duty he uses
    his sword to kill Jesus thereby elminating his suffering and
    also having the squad stay at the site all night until he dies.

    	Because of this Jesus tells him : "You are content to be a
    soldier, So you shall be until my return". This refers to the
    second coming of Christ. From that time on Casca finds out that
    he is immortal and wanders the Earth in and out of wars, waiting
    for Jesus to return and set him free from the curse placed on him.

    	There are at least 19 books out so far and I am up to #15.The
    book stores here in the Springs have not figured out whether this
    is adventure or SCIFI. I consider it a mix of both and highly
    reccommend the series. For any of you who have read and enjoyed
    the Durmmarest Saga by E.C. TUBB, I think you will enjoy this series
    also.

659.1Remember Barry Sadler?SANFAN::BARRETODETue Aug 02 1988 00:2934
I picked up one of the series last year, but it's still in my "To Be Read"
pile.
The author's name interested me, though. There was an ex-Green Baret in the
sixties named Sgt. Barry Sadler (anyone remember "Ballad of the Green
Berets"?). Suppose it's the same man?

      That was Staff Sergeant Barry Sadler, not just Sergeant.

    No biggie; even the O.D. people drop the "Staff", even 'tho there
    is a big gap between E5 & E6.

    I read everyone that comes out...It's like chewing popcorn
    and drinking soda...Can't keep you alive forever but it fills
    the spot.

    And either the first six are the best or you get used to them quickly.
