644.0. "Ether Ore" by SNDCSL::SMITH (TANSTAAI) Sat Jul 02 1988 14:38

    I just finished off Ether Ore by H.C. Turk [Ben Bova's Discoveries] and
    can't decide whether to trade it in to Annie's Book Swap or maybe burn
    it to keep it out of circulation. Melody Preece, living in a different
    (can't really say 'alternate') universe goes to Marz, drifts off to
    another universe with a different Marz, gets chewed up, burned as a
    witch (with a way out which doesn't work but gets rescued anyway),
    steals a trok (which flies for a while), and falls in with a group of
    witches to overthrow the bad guys. All interlaced with the ultimate
    deus-ex-machina of concept/idea power which can change anything around.
    Still not sure why I finished it, but unless you are into
    no-holds-barred fantasy, get a real book instead....

    Oh well....

    I really suspect that the 'different' spelling was incorporated
    not so much to give the reader the idea of a different universe
    as it was to relieve the burden on the proofreader, many words were
    just enough different to be annoying....

    Sounds a little like Piers Anthony. Just finished reading one of his
    books with an "alternate universe" theme. Had animals like "froogs"
    "bearver" and "mooear" in it. I agree. Annoying as hell ...
