606.0. "SF.NOTE statistics" by DEADLY::REDFORD () Fri Apr 22 1988 03:08

Following the lead in the movies notes file, here are some statistics

                                                Christianity: Incompatible?

There's only one book (trilogy actually) and one movie in the top ten.
The three topics devoted to one author with the most replies were:

   136  RAVEN1::HOLLABAUGH   13-SEP-1984    49  asimov
   277  NANOOK::DEBERRY      31-OCT-1985    44  Piers Anthony
   309   PROSE::WAJENBERG     6-MAR-1986    30  David Brin

There were 45 notes devoted to specific writers, 147 to specific
books or series of books, and 65 to specific movies or TV shows.

The 605 base notes had 234 authors, of which these were the top ten:

  27  LYNCH
  19  KLAES
  18  MAXSON
  18  KALLIS
  18  REDFORD
  16  BALS
  15  ASANKAR
  12  GOUN
  12  BOYAJIAN
  10  RAVAN
  10  POSTPISCHIL

If we count both base notes and replies, there were 584 authors and
8157 messages. These were the top ten authors of both notes and replies:

 683  BOYAJIAN
 571  KLAES
 410  WAJENBERG
 314  KALLIS
 234  POSTPISCHIL
 198  REDFORD
 191  MARSHALL
 183  RUDMAN
 143  FEHSKENS
 130  BUTENHOF

These ten accounted for about 38% of all messages. Larry, you might
catch Jerry yet! The rest of us don't have a hope.

There were an average of 12.5 replies to each base note.

The conference began on 8-dec-1983, and the last note was on 21-apr-1988.
That's 1915 days, so on average there was a new base note every 3.2 days and
4.3 messages per day. That's a fair amount of traffic. Does
anyone know if sf.note is one of the larger or more heavily visited
non-work notes files?

    I gotta beleive that Soapbox has the heaviest traffic! I tried
    to participate, but find I don't even have the time to follow it!
     No great loss though ;-)

606.2The really huge ones:CFACOM::WESSELSIt's more a guideline than a rule...Mon Apr 25 1988 17:4110

    	Carbuffs, also, is one of the most unwieldy conferences you'll
    ever find. SF is average, and not too bad for a newcomer to scan
    through and read old notes that are of interest (I did this not
    long ago).

    	P.S. Movies is also ridiculous. I deleted it because it was
    too big to bother with.

      While this is somewhat interesting, it is not science fiction,
      nor is it any of the other items allowed in this conference.
      See note 1.56.

      If you wish to discuss notes file statistics, start your own
      notes file for that purpose, and by all means let me know and
      I'll post a pointer to it here.

      This topic is now write-locked. It will remain here, unless
      someone really objects, but let's not have any more of this.
