576.0. "Iron Tower/Silver Call" by CSMSRE::WRIGHT (Dain Bramage) Tue Feb 16 1988 13:31

Has anyone else read the two series by Douglas Mckierney (I probably
have the first name wrong and misspelled the last...)??

They are the Silver Call Duology and the Iron Tower Trilogy.

Both series are very good, and before anyone starts screaming, yes
they are both very tolkienesque. However, for someone who had never
written a book before Mckierney does EXTREMELY well, and altghough
elements of both tales scream the HOBBIT and LOTR, the two series
are very different in detail and execution making them quit an
    enjoyable read.

Well worth the time and money if you are looking for a good rousing
fantasy epic that is a light read, but be warned, these books are
    not easy to put down....

(as a side note, the Silver Call was written first, but published
second because the Iron Tower takes place before it, and for best
effect (and least confusion) the Iron Tower should be read first...)

    enjoy,

    Clark.

I seem to remember that McKierny (I thinl his first name is
Dennis, but I won't swear to it) is a regular contributor to SFL.

I also seem to remember him saying that the "Tolkienesque" feeling
you got was intentional. He wrote them in the Tolkien world, but
the Tolkien estate would not allow him to publish using the Tolkien
world. His publisher's still wanted the books so... change a country
name here, change a race name there, presto chango they are no longer
    "Tolkien".

Anyone who knows more/better details feel free to augment/correct
    my version...

Trace is correct on both accounts (the author's first name ---
although is surname is "McKiernan" :-) --- and the "origins" of
    the books).

McKiernan mentioned in SFL, as a defense against charges that he
"ripped off" Tolkien, that he originally wrote them set in Middle
Earth as a means to pass the time while an invalid. As Trace said,
Tolkien's estate wouldn't allow the setting, etc. to be used, so
"the names were changed to protect the innocent".

Personally, I don't feel that this should've let him off the hook.
Just changing the names shouldn't be enough to avoid ripping someone
    off.
