527.0. "Dragonlance series" by NEWVAX::SJONES () Wed Sep 23 1987 14:20

I recently read a series of books called "Dragonlance" by the authors
of the TSR series games "Dungeons and Dragons". I have not seen
any othe references to this series in the sci-fi conf. and am having
no luck getting into the fantasy conference. Anybody read it?
I will not say it even comes close to the Rings trilogy (what
does?) but is good reading nonetheless. Apparently the authors
created the charachters during a game then did some role playing
from which came the basic story line. I've heard there are some
incedental short stories from them about Krynn but have yet to come
    across them.

Also, what happened to Fantasy & RP?

There are currently eight books out in this series. The first three
deal with the "Dragonlance Wars" in which Raistlin and Caramon are
instrumental in opposing the "Dark Queen" and her attempt to take
over Krynn. The next three deal more closely with the brothers
and their relationship (almost a good (Caramon) vs. evil (Raistlin)
theme). The seventh book is a series of short stories that embellish
the story of the first six, in much the same manner as Silmarillion
does to Lord of the Rings. I haven't read the eight book yet.

Like so many successful fantasy novels, I noticed that a major
character is from a smallish, incredibly naive, and extremely likeable
(except to some of the other characters) race of inhabitants. This
seems to be a requirement these days for fantasy novels.

My opinion of this series is that it started out OK, dragged out
in the second series, and probably should've ended there.

Re "fantasy and RP": The fantasy role-playing conference is at
4GL::FRP, where it moved some time ago. I've seen a couple of
references to the Dragonlance game material, but I couldn't find
one about the books. (Of course, in FRP books are usually mentioned
as source material only; a lousy book can still provide some great
    ideas for a campaign.)

I haven't read any of the Dragonlance books myself, though I have
read a story or two. The major characters seemed interesting, but
    not enough to grab me.

    RE 1...
I agree with you in that they did seem to drag a little, but still
superficial "fun" reading. I had quite a few laughs w/Tasslehoff's
    antics.
Do you now the name of the last two books?

    RE: .3

Actually, there are three books in the series, collectively called the
Dragonlance Tales. The first is "The Magic of Krynn". The second
is "Kender, Gully Dwarves, and Gnomes". I haven't seen the
third of the series yet, but it's listed in the back of the other
two and titled "Love and War". By the way, most of the stories
in the first two are not written by Weis and Hickman. I would imagine
that the trend continues in the third. Kind of like Marion Zimmer
Bradley and the "Friends of Darkover".

I've read about four of books so far and I thought they were really
good.Mind you I have'nt read to many SF books, the last one was
THE LEGEND OF HUMA which is part of a series of three I believe.
The series is titled Legends by the same two authors I think, It's
been a while since I read it and I'm on the night shift.

You can tell it's knocking off time as I made a mistake in the last
note ,it was'nt Legends but Heroes that was the title of the series.
It centered arround the life of the Knight Huma and his fight to be
a knght like his father before him.It also covers the first battle
of Kyrnn against the dark queen and her minions and the search for
the famed dragonlance. It was good to read ,I have'nt read any others i
in the series yet but that will be rectified very shortly, like
    tomorrow.

If you haven't already, read the twin's trilogy (I can't for the life
of me remember any titles). I thougth that was the best, I tried
reading some of the other ones and just couldn't get into them like I
    did with the twin's series.
