517.0. ""the boy scouts got the bomb"" by AMULET::STOLOS () Wed Aug 19 1987 19:55

i have noticed a scary trend in sf, the long drawn out nuclear
war. i first noticed it in RAH novel FRIDAY where alot of small
groups had the bomb, you really didn't know who was fighting who
but just that a major city would go in the world once a month...
it cropped up again in John Varley novel DEMON. it strikes me
as a new trend of the 80's where before we would go in a bang,
now it seem like a russian roulette like wimper. although the
comparison seem moot when its your city, it seems scary to endure
7-10 year of the same type of tension we experienced in the
cuban missile crisis. any thoughts on this, would such a war be
    possible?
p.s. sorry to be in the dr strangelove mode i think the nova/frontline
rerun on star war triggered it off..."gentlemen!! there is no fighting
    in the war room!"

A drawn-out, sputtering, nuclear war seems more likely to me than the
single spasm that is usually described. Everyone knows that the spasm
would be the end of all sides, and maybe of all humanity. Strategic
planners have to look at the worst case, but that's not necessarily
the most probable. A few hotheads might fire some missiles at the
start of the war, but then it would settle down into a long war of
attrition. Would this be worse? Of course not, since the alternative
    is possible extinction.

The actual quote from DR. STRANGELOVE is:

"Gentlemen! You can't fight in here; this is the War Room!"
