423.0. "Lord's Richard Blade series" by ANT::MLOEWE (Mike Loewe) Wed Dec 17 1986 15:21

I read an SF/fantasy book about 15 years ago and I can't remember the
name of the book or the author. The name of the character was Blade,
who was transported to a strange planet with barbarians, beasts,
sorcerers and sorceress. The method of travel was due to some brain
machine that was attached to his skull and he would go into a deep
sleep. The dreams were of being on another world. When he came
out of the sleep, he thought it was a dream until he found an object
in his pocket that was an souvenir from the planet.
I also remember he had a huge bronze axe (blade) that he would swing
around as if it made of balsa wood due to his immense strength.
The writing was very similar to styles by Burroughs and Lin Carter.
I believe it was also a short series.
Does anyone remember this author or name of books? I enjoyed it
back then and I would like to pick it up again.

The "author" was Jeffrey Lord, who was actually a number of
different authors. The series ("Richard Blade") numbered up
into the 30's before it finally died.

Every used paperback place I was ever in had at least one Blade
book. Try some Annie's Book Stops.

Funny you should mention that. I just picked up the first book
in the series over the Holidays at Annie's. Although I go to Annie's
frequently, I've never noticed it before.

Are they all similar to the first one? Where does it go from there?

They are basically the same. Blade is transported naked into a
random dimension (they find a way to tell which one towards the
end of the series). He can automatically speak the language, there
is always a crisis he gets embroiled in and usually saves the day,
he beds at least one voluptuous female, and returns (sometimes
inopportunely) to the Home Dimension, sometimes with something in
his hand (no, not that; see line 5). *And* his sexual prowess/
need increases with each trip thru the machine.

This is why I've only made it to #15. Hmmm. Maybe I should read
#37. By then he Blade must be boffing every bod he bumps into.

The series seems to be based on REH's Almuric.

Kind of sounds like an SF or Fantasy Nick Carter book. :^)

    Thanks for the info.
