403.0. "Star Trek: The Next Generation" by AIMHI::EMERY () Tue Oct 14 1986 11:32

    This month's LOCUS tells us, "Fox Broadcasting Company has cancelled
    a new STAR TREK prequel TV series for its proposed fourth network.
     Fox had intended to produce shows with new characters, set in flight
    school before the Enterprise set out on its travels. But Paramount
    Television feared that the project might cut into profits for STAR
    TREK IV, the movie due this December, so the deal is off."

403.1WHAT?!!!!EDEN::KLAESMostly harmless.Tue Oct 14 1986 12:358
    	Is this NEW information, or something from EARLIER in October?

    	Would Fox really say YES one day, and NO the next?

    	Don't they realize they're dealing with STAR TREK fans?!

    The information is in the October LOCUS, with no further indication
    of time of release.

    That's most likely the notice of cancellation of the previously
    intended show. Notice that the news item mentions the Fox network
    and that it was to be a "prequel" series. The new plans are for
    non-network syndication and a series set a century *later*.

    Lead time for a monthly newsletter does not make for timely
    reporting.

    The gentleman who sits across the aisle from me heard an announcement
    for the 100-years-later Star Trek series on his car radio as he
    drove to work this morning. They are gearing up for 25 episodes.

403.6What "careless"?PROSE::WAJENBERGWed Oct 15 1986 14:015
    I fail to see any carelessness concerning the source. Emery gives
    the magazine and the issue, and virtually quotes what they have
    to say.

403.7You're right, I'm datedAIMHI::EMERYWed Oct 15 1986 16:398
    True. My apologies. I had read about the century-later Star Trek,
    but could not remember where. Nor could I remember which came first.
    LOCUS seems to me crudely enough reproduced that the lead time on
    it would be short (as opposed to a slick magazine).

    You get the news we get. It's up to your brain to distinguish the

    Star Trek:The Next Generation is alive and well.

    It is being produced by Paramount and will be syndicated, with the
    first episode to be broadcast on 3 Oct 87 (in Boston, on Channel
    5/WCVB). Thirteen episodes have been committed-to.

Isn't the new Star Trek a network (ABC) show ? As far as I know the
first show is still scheduled for the network premier on Oct 3 (it's
been on my calendar for months).....

403.11Revised pointer to STAR_TREK conferenceDICKNS::KLAESAngels in the Architecture.Tue Sep 29 1987 20:0110
    	No, STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION is a *syndicated* series,
    premiering across the United States and Canada on many different
    networks and channels from September 28 through October 10.

    	I would suggest reading more about it in the THEBAY::STAR_TREK
    Conference. Press the KP7 or SELECT key to add the Conference to
    your Notebook.

    re:.10

    I think your point of confusion is that the Boston channel that
    is showing it is WCVB, which is the ABC affiliate. WCVB is being
    rebellious and bougth the rights to ST:TNG and is showing it instead
    of the ABC program for that time slot.

		20 Things That Never Happen in "Star Trek"
		~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. The Enterprise runs into a mysterious energy field of a type it has
encountered several times before.
2. The Enterprise goes to visit a remote outpost of scientists, who
are all perfectly alright.
3. Some of the crew visit the holodeck, and it works properly.
4. The crew of the Enterprise discover a totally new lifeform, which
later turns out to be a rather well-known old lifeform wearing a funny
hat.
5. The crew ofthe Enterprise are struck by a mysterious plague, for
which the only cure can be found in the well-stocked Enterprise
sick-bay.
6.The Captain has to make a difficult decision about a less advanced
people which is made a great deal easier by the Starfleet Prime
Directive.
7. The Enterprise successfully ferries an alien VIP from one place to
another without serious incident.
8. An enigmatic being composed of pure energy attempts to interface to
the Enterprise's computer, only to find out that it has forgotten to
bring the right leads.
9. A power surge on the Bridge is rapidly and correctly diagnosed as a
faulty capacitor by the highly-trained and competent engineering
staff.
10. The Enterprise is captured by a vastly superior alien intelligence
which does not put them on trial.
11. The Enterprise is captured by a vastly inferior alien intelligence
which they easily pacify by offering it some sweeties.
12. The Enterprise visits an earth-type planet called "Paradise" where
everyone is happy all of the time. However, everything is soon
revealed to be exactly what it seems.
13. A major Starfleet emergency breaks out near the Enterprise, but
fortunately some other ships in the area are able to deal with it to
everyone's satisfaction.
14. The Enterprise is involved in a bizarre time-warp experience which
is in some way unconnected with the Late 20th Century.
15. Kirk (or Riker) falls in love with a woman on a planet he visits,
and isn't tragically separated from her at the end of the episode.
16. Counsellor Troi states something other than the blindingly
obvious.
17. The warp engines start playing up a bit, but seem to sort
themselves out after a while without any intervention from boy genius
Wesley Crusher.
18. Wesley Crusher gets beaten up by his classmates for being a smarmy
git, and consequently has a go at making some friends of his own age
for a change.
19. Spock (or Data) is fired from his high-ranking position for not
being able to understand the most basic nuances of about one in three
sentences that anyone says to him.
20. Most things that are new or in some way unexpected.
But we still love it, right kids?
re: STNG
I will post this in the Star Trek conference...
I saw a new STNG book out called (re?)Unification.  It apparently deals
with the STNG episode by the same name that will be broadcast soon.
The book was seen in Booksmith, in the Pheasant Lane Mall, Nashua NH USA.
It was paperback and about $4.00 or so.
