250.0. "The Butterfly Kid" by WILLIE::CANNOY () Fri Aug 09 1985 02:27

I need some help recalling a series, and a set of authors involved, which
were new wave, drug-culture, comedy of errors, BEM-infested joys.

The first was _The_Butterfly_Kid_ by ?????. The second was _The_Unicorn_Girl_
by (I think) Michael Kurland. The third I can't even recall. They were very
silly, very much an in-joke in SF circles. I would love to find copies, but
need to know the rest of the information. Any publishing history would also
help.

Chester Anderson The Butterfly Kid
Michael Kurland The Unicorn Girl
T.A. Waters The Probability Pad

Published '67-'70. I have 'em if you need more publishing info (if any).
Good luck on finding them; I've never seen one in the Oldie Stores. Guess
you'll have to request them from the "Finder" stores.

My copies, of course, are vacuum-packed in a mayonnaise jar in Funk & Wagnall's
Root Cellar in Point Blank, Siberia.

And yes, they were a little silly, but I read them during my formative years,
during which time I read EVERYTHING and liked most of it.

I'm older now....

THE BUTTERFLY KID was reprinted about 5 years ago or so by Pocket Books,
back when Dave Hartwell was editor there (but before they started the
Timescape line). Unfortuantely, they didn't do the other two. THE BUTTERFLY
KID and THE UNICORN GIRL aren't all that hard to find --- I occasionally
run across them in my travels --- but THE PROBABILITY PAD is a real bitch.
It's one of those books that You Just Don't See Anywhere.

Then the next logical question is: Where does Jerry travel? I circulate
around Worcester County (Mass.) and haven't seen them for a couple years.

Jerry--if your Node is a clue you're in Acton (?). If you could pass on
a few names of stores having a good selection I would really appreciate it.
(Like everyone else, I have a little list....)

I will keep my pulp-eye peeled for the books in question in my area.

I travel (for bookstores) up to Maine and New Hampshire, down to Rhode Island,
throughout a good part of Eastern Massachusetts, and out to Minneapolis.

A reasonably good store is Dunham's in Bedford (MA) center, across from the
police station (on Great Rd.). Their prices are generally 1/2 cover, but for
older paperbacks, they're a tad high (usually .75 to $1.00 for books cover-
priced .60 or less), but they usually have some good stock.

There's also The Book Bear in West Brookfield, MA (on Rte. 9) and Isaiah Thomas
Bookstore in Worcester (on Main St. near Atamian Ford). The latter is mostly
oriented toward antiquarian material, but they stick out a load of paperbacks
on the front porch that are priced fairly cheaply. They usually have 4-5 boxes
of sf.

Jerry, what do you think of UNCLE HUGO'S ?

Can you recommend anything comparable around here ??

(around here is boston's metro west; I
	 live in marlboro)

Uncle Hugo's is quite the bookstore (eh, Roger?).

In this area, you might consider:

The Science Fantasy Bookstore, Harvard Sq., Cambridge. (The owner
is Spike MacPhee, a former roommate. Tell him I sent you.)

The Fabulous Fiction Bookstore, Park Ave., Worcester. (I don't
particularly like the store, but it has a *large* selection of sf
and might have whatever you may be looking for.)

There something about UNCLE HUGO'S I missed in the four years I
hung out in that place ?

By the by, I'm heading out to Minneapolis in three weeks; anything
special at U.H.'s you might want picked up ? That's assuming it's
still there; I'm told Mpls has gone through drastic revitalization
in the past two years...

No, nothing special. I may be heading out that way in the near future,
anyway. If you haven't been out there within the last couple of years,
I should warn you that Hugo's has moved. It's now on Chicago Ave., near
Lake St., across from the Sears parking lot. If Scott Imes is at the
counter, tell him I said hello.

In re .6, .7:

I visited Uncle Hugo's when I was in Minneapolis for SIGGRAPH last year.
Scott found me a copy of every single title on the "books to find" list I
habitually carry around. Some of the items on it had been there for years!
