220.0. "SF Writing Contest!" by NUTMEG::BALS () Mon Jun 24 1985 15:57

For all you struggling writers out there, please note that L. Ron
Hubbard is sponsoring a "Writers of the Future" Contest for *new and
amateur writers. Prizes range from $1,000 (1st) to $500 (3rd) dollars.

The contest is being done in quarters. Four quarterly contests are
still available for entries. Last contest ends June 30, 1986.

For full information, and complete contest rules, please send me mail
at NUTMEG::BALS, with your *full* Digital address, and I will send you
a hard-copy/photocopy. The information can also be obtained by getting
a copy of:

                Writers of the Future
                Edited by Algis Budrys
                Bridge Publications -- 1985
                $ 3.95 Paperback
                ISBN 0-88404-170-0

                    ** PLEASE READ **

If you are interested, please note that I have no motives for publicizing
the above contest other than the interest expressed in previous notes on
how to get SF published. I also have no additional information about the
contest other than what I will send to you.

However, it is my personal opinion that L. Ron Hubbard and quite likely
the contest sponsors are associated with the Scientologist movement. In
my opinion, submitting a manuscript to the contest with the required
author's address *and* telephone number, might result in your being
solicited in regard to Scientology.

Therefore, I strongly recommend that if you are unfamiliar with Scientology
you research it independently prior to your submission to the contest. I'd
further recommend that if you have any misgivings about even the
*possibility* of solicitation that you take that into consideration prior to
your decision to make a submission to the contest.

Again, the preceding two paragraphs are entirely my personal opinion, and
have no basis other than that. The preceding two paragraphs should not be
construed as either direct or implied criticism of L. Ron Hubbard, sponsors
or judges of the contest, Bridge publications, Scientology, and its members.
