210.0. "DIRTY DELANEY?" by NUTMEG::BALS () Wed May 29 1985 16:41

If anyone is interested,, I have the original, Lancer, paperback
edition of Delaney's "TIDES OF LUST" -- his one (as far as I know)
try at writing a pornographic novel.

Not SF, but not really porno either, at least not in the accepted(?)
sense. I'm sure it confused a lot of those people in raincoats.

Delany himself mentioned in 1973 that even he didn't have a copy of
the book. (maybe I should get ahold of him). Anyway, for you Delany
fans who want to round out your collections or see another side of
SRD, make me an offer through either MAIL (NUTMEG::BALS) or at DTN
264-8622.

p.s. I should amend that 'not really porno' statement. The language/
scenes are very strong, albeit well-written. So if that sort of stuff
ranks you out (as Lenny Bruce was wont to say), you won't be interested.

Well over a year since I entered the base note, I have now sold
"Tides of Lust." It's on its way, Rita :-).

Quite a few people new to the file who hadn't read .0 sent me mail when
I noted in .2 that I had finally sold ToL. Since there appears to
be a number of Delany collectors out there, I wanted to note that
I recently stumbled across a first-edition copy of "quark #1" during
one of my used-bookstore searches. While certainly not as rare as
ToL, it may be of interest to the Delany completist.

For those not familiar with the "quark" series, it was a self-named
paperback "quarterly of speculative fiction" edited by Delany and his
then-wife, Marilyn Hacker during the early `70s. The series didn't
last that long, if memory serves, only four issues.

"quark #1" contains short stories by R.A. Lafferty, Gardner Dozois,
Ursula K. LeGuin, Gregory Benford, Joanna Russ, Christopher Priest,
Ed Byrant, A.E. Van Vogt, as well as some lesser-known authors.
It also contains an essay by Delany (no fiction), and some interesting
illustrations by Russell FitzGerald and Stephen Gilden.

The book is is in good shape, NM/F if I had to categorize. Feel free
to send mail to NUTMEG::BALS if you're interested in it. I'll entertain
    any reasonable offer :-).

I am fortunate to have Q1. I am, however, looking for Q2 to
    complete the set.
