154.0. "SF film news" by CYGNUS::ARVIDSON () Mon Oct 29 1984 23:42

From STARLOG magazine issues 88+89

STAR TREK IV is the title. Leonard Nimoy is the director. And Harve Bennett
is the producer. The adventure does, indeed, continue. Bennett will *not*
write the sequel; a search is under way for a "Hollywood screenwriter"
to pen the next mission of Kirk and company(though both Bennett
and Nimoy will be involved in the writing process). Paramount
Pictures hopes this sequel will be ready for release at Christmas 1985.

THE EWOK MOVIE, still in post-production, has a new title--The *Ewok
adventure*. ABC hopes to air the TV special at Thanksgiving, though
if more editing time is needed, it could be pushed back closer to
Christmas, perhaps even to December 25 itself--a perfect present
from Lucasfilm. By the way, other media have reported all sorts
of wild rumors about a "STAR WARS movie shooting real soon."Nope.Sorry.All
wrong. *no* new star wars film, yet

Is Spielberg directing the new ET picture? I hope so!

Also, Spielberg is planning a live-action version of Peter Pan for release
in '86.

I think that the E.T. bit was suppose to read "re-release" of the original
film. I don't think the sequel is past the "Heh! Let's do an E.T. II!" stage.

The other iron in Spielberg's fire is a film version of King & Straub's
THE TALISMAN.

OOPS! After re-reading .0, I think you are right, Jerry.

Entertainment Tonight last night mentioned that SS has announced auditions
for the lead for a new film. They said he was looking for someone who "looked
18". At first I thought they were talking about Peter Pan, but the title they
gave sounded like something dealing with time travel or the future. Did anyone
catch that title or have any other info?

If they are indeed already preparing to film "The Talisman", we may
be in trouble...

(Sorry). I put a note about "The Talisman" into BOOKS (since it hasn't
been getting much business of late, and besides, "The Talisman" is
NOT science fiction and I'm not too sure about the fantasy, either...).

Um, enough of this rambling. I've gotten to page 60 of Talisman, and
there I have stopped, perhaps forever. It feels like a rehash of
"The Neverending Story", and does NOT feel like King-quality at all.
So far it's closer to Straub's "Shadowlands", which I also didn't like.
I have no idea how good a film it could be; perhaps it is one of those
books which only realize their full potential on the screen? (she said
doubtfully).

Since Supergirl was mentioned I will discuss it.

The movie has been in England for some time. I saw it in August. I enjoyed it
much more than I had expected. It takes the comic vein of Superman I and
improves on it. Peter O' Toole does his standard manic role, Peter Cook has
the sort of character that we (at least the English) remember from his Pete
and Dud days. If you are expecting supah doopah special effects then you
will be disappointed. In fact the only minus point is that some of the
flying, gazing at the scenery bits are overdone.

I may even see it again stateside.

and DUNE, don't you dare forget it. I feel this might be good,
even though they'll do it wrong in one of two ways:

1.they will leave out half the story, the connectors,
the parts which make this book one of my favorites.

2.they will cram every single word in, and anyone who
hasn't read it will get totally screwed up, and they
		  won't even make a videotape.

Last night Entertainment Tonight showed some exclusive scenes from
the movie DUNE. It hand the worm coming out of the ground. This
is real going to be for SF lovers. The movie is due out in DECEMBER.
They also said that they have had some private viewings and the
comments weren't to favorable. ET did not comment any further.

There was a rumour that Michael Jackson (Bill Lynch's favorite singer)
was going to be in the Peter Pan movie. Anybody know for sure???

154.9TOPDOC::LYNCHThu Nov 08 1984 15:533
That has been denied by Spielberg and MJ. So it's probably true! :-)

I read the other day that William Shatner will not be in the next Star
Trek movie because he wanted more than they were willing to pay him, who
knows maybe it will all be worked out by production time.
