86.0. "Dune Encyclopedia" by DRAGON::SPERT () Wed Jun 13 1984 11:13

The Dune Encyclopedia is a compendium of people, places, and events
from (what else) the Dune series. Unlike most such works, this is
full of original material which attempts to fill in some of the
history which Herbert hinted at but never explained. It was done
with Herbert's approval, too. There were 43 contributors. It's
very much in the style of an encyclopedia and I'm really hooked.
There's a timeline covering important historical events from the
first Emperor (Alexander the Great) thru Leto II. (Yup, the
Galactic Empire has always existed. For instance, the Imperial
Seat is now located in House Washington which took it over from
House Windsor.)

If you see it, read the entries on "Family Atomics" and the
"Butlerian Jihad". If those don't grab you, then this probably
isn't worth it for you.

Trade paperback; $9.95;

I've seen it around, too, and I want to get it (I'm a sucker for a
good concordance), but I want to hunt around a bit as I understand
there is a hardcover edition out (I like my reference books in hard-
cover since I figure I'm going to be thumbig through them a lot,
and hardcovers are (obviously) more sturdy. If anyone in the area
will have the hardcover, the New England Mobile Book Fair will,
and their books are 20% off to boot.
