53.0. "SF on the Radio" by ATFAB::WYMAN () Tue Apr 10 1984 04:43

Note 52 on Bradbury caused me to fondly remember that as a kid we
used to listen to SF on the AFN (Armed Forces Radio) in Germany. My
favorite show was "X Minus 1" which was supposedly a stateside show
re-broadcast for the overseas folks... Does anyone know if "X Minus 1" or
similar things are available over the airwaves in the US anymore?

Some of the old radio shows are available from libraries. Mass. has
a generally good collection. KAAY from Little Rock (1090 AM) 'used'
to run old episode around 2am...I'll check if they still do.

Some time around 1971/72/73 the BBC did an execellent serialization of the
Foundation trilogy on the radio. Did it play over here ? - if not I suggest
that you all start writing to NPR requesting that they purchase it.

There are several tapes available on "X minus One". I had to
listen to it on a radio huddled under the covers of my bed so my
father couldn't hear. He didn't really think that SF was the work
of the devil, but it was definitely trash that corrupts young
minds. Now that my son and daughter and I do D&D and TRAVELLER,
he is properly horrified..and the grandchildren love digging him
about it.

Just returned from Japan. I tuned in Armed Forces Radio just in time
to hear "X minus One". From the announcer style, I would guess it
was done in the 50's or early 60's. It was done by NBC in conjunction
with Galaxy magazine. This episode was from a story by Sturgeon.

Apparently they did radio adaptions of short stories from the magazine.
Sounds like a technique that would still work today.

I thought it was called "X - the Unknown".

Nope! It was X-1.
