7.0. "Eddings' CASTLE OF WIZARDRY" by CDR::OKEEFE () Mon Dec 19 1983 14:00

Is fantasy acceptable in this NOTES file? If it is does anyone have any
information on when the book Castle of Wizardry by David Eddings
is coming out. I've read the first three books of the Belgariad and
I'm eagerly awaiting the next one.

	Have any of you out there read Moreta yet?

SF is not fantasy.
7.3NUHAVN::CANTORWed Dec 21 1983 05:203
... and conversely.

But they are often discussed together.
7.4ORAC::BUTENHOFWed Dec 21 1983 11:307
Since the boundaries between SF and fantasy are often rather blurry, and
in many cases outright meaningless (particularly when SF writers bring
the touch of science to sword and sorcery type stuff), it would be a shame
to exclude fantasy interests from this notes file. Who knows, they may
say something interesting!!!

Subject: next book in the Belgariad

	Bad news folks: The next book of the Belgariad by David Eddings
(book 4; Castle of Wizardry) isn't due out till the spring. The fifth
and final book (Enchanted End Game) is expected out within a month of
book 4 though. If you havn't read this delightful fantasy yet - I strongly
recommend it. The three books already published are: Pawn of Prophecy,
Queen of Sorcery, and Magician's Gambit.

Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

Certainly fantasy belongs here. Who knows when it might no longer be
fantasy... but 1984...

...And it is.

"Castle of Wizardry" is now available in stores.

"Moreta" is good, as McCaffrey usually is, but the ending was a complete
surprise and shock to me. 'Nuff said.

Regarding the Belgariad series - I'm told the 5th and final book is scheduled
for publication in December 84'.

Any fantasy readers out there know of any other GOOD fantasy works currently
available ?

Well, as for good fantasy, you can try The Gandalara Cycle (mentioned in
more detail in Note #126.2).

The is also the Lords of Dus:

	The Lure of the Basilisk
	The Seven Altars of Dusarra
	The Sword of Bheleu
	The Book of Silence

The author is Lawrence Watt-Evans, the publisher is Del Rey Books. These
four books cover the entire story and are all published (no waiting).

It is the story of Garth, the Overman, who desires immortal fame. He
seeks the seers, (here is an excerpt):

------------------------------------------------------------

"Death is everywhere", the decrepit creature replied.

"I know that, Ao; I would it were not so." The hag addressed as Ao
merely shrugged, and the warrior continued: "It makes life pointless --
to know that I and all I know will die and pass away, as if I had never
been." He paused briefly, then went on. "I wish that it were possible
for me to perform some feat of cosmic significance, to change the nature
of things, so that all would look back millennia from now and say,
'Garth did this.' I wish that I could alter the uncaring universe so
that even the stars would respond to my passing, so that my life would
not be insignificant."

Ao moved uncomfortably. "You are a lord and a warrior whose deeds will
be recalled for a generation."

"I am known to a tiny corner of a single continent; and even there, as
you yourself say, I will be remembered only for a century or two, an
instant in the life of the world."

"What would you have of us, my sister and myself?"

"Is it possible for a mortal being to alter the way things are?"

"That, it is said, is the province of the gods; if the gods are the
baseless myth some believe them, then it is the role of Fate and
Chance."

Garth had apparently expected this reply; there was only the slightest
pause before he said, "I would have it, then, that if I cannot change
the world, at the least the world shall remember me. I would have it
that my name shall be known as long as anything shall live, to the end
of time. Can this be?" He stared at the misshapen hag, his usually
expressionless face intent.

She gazed back impassively and answered slowly, "It is your desire that
you be known throughout history, from now until the end of the world?"

"Yes."

"This can be done." Her tone seemed curiously reluctant.

"How?"

"Go to the village called Skelleth, and seek these the Forgotten King;
submit yourself to him, obey him without fail, and what you have wished
will be."

"How am I to find this king?"

"He is to be found in the King's Inn, clad in yellow rags."

------------------------------------------------------------

The rest you'll have to read for yourself.

P.S. The Sword of Bheleu is one *HELL* of a sword! (If you read the
story, you'll know what I mean.)

For those of you who have been waiting for it, the Enchanters' End Game
is now available in your book store. I just picked up my copy today. It
is the last book in the series.

 I AGREE WITH DAVE IT WOULD BE A SHAME TO CUT OUT THE FANTASY, BECAUSE
    ALOT OF PEOPLE NAMELY MYSELF LOVE BOTH SF AND FANTASY. AND THOSE
    WHO ARE NOT INTERESTED IN ONE OR THE OTHER CAN SIMPLY BYPASS. THIS
    IS MY FIRST REPLY IN VAX NOTES HOPE IT WORKS!!! HERE GOES NOTHING.

    Hi the science fiction fans galore and all other non-evolved life-forms

    I have just joined this conference and feel that fantasy and science
    fiction go hand in hand.

    Whilst on the topic of Eddings had anybody had a read of the follow
    up to the Belgariad? There are four books on the market and the
    fifth is not due for another year.

    Titles:
    		Guardians of the West;
    		King of the Murgos;
    		Demon Lord of Karanda;
    		Sorceress of Darshiva;
    		Seeress of Kell (forthcoming)

    He has also started another fantasy series entitled "The Ellenium
    (sp?)" so far only one of the three books has been published - to
    all D.Eddings fans this is a definite MUST.....

    Cheerio and happy reading

    Hi People,

    	I was wondering if anyone has seen or heard about David Eddings
    first book called "THE HIGH HUNT". I have been looking everywhere for
    it could someone let me know where in Canada I can get it. Also if
    anyone has read it please let me know what you thought of it.

    	By the way, if you are a fan of Eddings you might want to check
    out Robert Jordan (NOTE:  943).
