446.5Caribbean check-out for prospective UK diver ?LJSRV2::MAURERISBU Product Development Ops.Mon Apr 07 1997 14:5920
I have a friend in the UK who has expressed an interest in joining us
on our Caribbean dive vacation next spring. Unfortunately, he's not
    certified.

    I have a couple of questions -

In the UK, people do training under the auspices of the BSAC only,
right ? I mean, PADI doesn't have a presence, do they ? What about
other agencies ? I know the resort we'll probably be going to (for the
5th time) does PADI check-out certifications because I've seen people
doing their coursework there, but I don't know about other agencies.

I'd like to be able to tell him to do the basic training, then meet us
there, do his certification check-out and vacation with us. He lives
near Reading/Basingstoke - are there places for him to get trained
    nearby ?

    Thanks for your help,

    Jon

    Jon,

PADI is a worldwide training organization but as with any other
large organization that doesn't mean a PADI training facility or
instructor will exist "close" to Reading/Basingstoke. I suggest
that your friend check the equivalent of the "yellow pages" for
the nearest dive training. Other organizations such as NAUI are
worldwide, your freiend should be able to find a good training
agency if they really want to learn to dive.

Jon,

There is a PADI centre in Reading - that's where we trained. It's run by a
guy called Peter Wright, who can be contacted via our PADI dive shop, Reading
Dive in Woodley, on 0118 926 4814. We also have a diving club which welcomes
all divers, whatever their accreditation - the club, shop and school are
independent bodies, but very synergisitic!!

Tell your friend to contact me, Sue Crier @reo, 830 4312, for more
information, or pop into the shop anytime.
