2246.0. "Netview/POLYCENTER queries" by CHEFS::16.195.80.55::WorkBenchUser () Tue May 06 1997 17:26

Looking for help/guidance/pointers please.......

My customer is a heavyweight user of various management tools including :-

POLYCENTER Scheduler
Console Manager
System Watchdog
DECPS Performance Monitor
RoboMon
POLYCENTER Netview (UNIX and NT)
clearVISN
HP OpenView

These are used in a couple of areas - Network Operations and Systems
Management - loosely coupled departments cooperating with each other.

The requirement :-

The support department is being measured on service levels and have been
asked to provide statistics on Applications Uptime where such applications as
Pathworks, Oracle instances, Web Servers etc. now, with Print Queues, News
Demons, File Services etc. to come later. This is obviously more difficult
than just system uptime !

The customer is quite switched-on and tells me that DECPS provides a good
basis for being able to monitor processes and records LOTS of data about
them, he just wants a way to store and transport such data and turn it all
into useful reports. The storage of data is important to allow for individual
system or network outage/downtime. It might be useful to be able to offer
support for SNMP TRAPS as well as central Management system polling of such
data.

The enviroment which is managed is large, geographically spread around a
large country-wide routed network and includes OpenVMS, UNIX and NT systems.
The required level of accuracy is between 2 and 15 minutes at this stage
though might firm-up more aggressively later.

Does anyone have an immediate solution to hand ? Or is this likely to involve
a range of tools and techniques ?

My customer has raised the notion of POLYCENTER Common Agent as an extensible
mechanism of moving (DECPS) data to a management platform, but I believe this
only works on UNIX platforms.....

Is there anything which RoboMon offers - even though this is proprietary ?

Another requirement will be to access the results of the reporting from a Web
browser. ie. anyone on the net should be able to see the data on demand.

Does Netview have anything to offer in terms of standard report templates ?

I think this embodies the gist of the requirement, if you need more please
ask.

Thanks in advance for ANY help.

Hi,

I suggest you contact Will Mcgrath (wmcgrath@4.298.enet.dec.com),
who is starting to look at "application management".

Fyi, the IETF is working to standardize SNMP MIBs for this as well.
You can read some of that stuff (if you are so inclined) from
http://www.zk3.dec.com/~daniele/eSNMP.html.

A heads-up. Common Agent was retired (does not ship) in V4.0 of Digital UNIX.
The new extensible agent environment (eSNMP) is available on Digital UNIX
and OpenVMS.

2246.2Where is eSNMP to be had ?CHEFS::rasmodem2.reo.dec.com::WorkBenchUserWed May 07 1997 23:4910
Mike

Where do I find the eSNMP for UNIX an OVMS ? Is it included with the O/S or
as a separate layered product ?

Does Netview/TME 10 handle eSNMP ?

Thanks

I don't know, I just throw the code over the wall to them :-)

>Does Netview/TME 10 handle eSNMP ?

I don't understand the question. A management station isn't aware of the
agent's internal implementation...
