    Explain yourself, what do you mean?

When i sit at a terminal connected to a DECserver, i can get to the
"Local> " prompt by hitting the Break key (F5). Do a "Local> HELP LOCK"

[start quote]

LOCK

When you issue LOCK, you must enter a password twice, once on the "Lock
Password>" and once to the "Verification>" prompts. To unlock your terminal,
enter the same password to the "Unlock Password>" prompt.

The password is a string of 1 to 6 keyboard characters.

[end quote]

Once a terminal connected to DECserver is locked, that whole port is jammed.
What i would like to know is if anyone has discovered any way of unlocking
a port, without initially knowing the password, namely any flaws in the
security implementation on the DECserver.

Or perhaps someone could explain how the password system on a DECserver
works, ie memory stored ? retrievable ? etc.

Regards.
666.3Log out the PortBISTRO::WOODAndy Wood @VBOTue Jan 19 1988 12:487

    In order to free the port the person(s) with the SET PORT PRIV password
    can log the port out. This will also cause all the current sessions
    being run from that port to be logged out.

    If you DO know a way to crack the DECserver LOCK command, please don't
    post it here.

Easy way to unlock a locked DECserver port - yank the power cord!

    "Hacking" is the job of programming taken to an art.
    "Cracking" is malicious application of that talent. I don't want
    cracking hints in this notesfile.

    Anyone who objects is welcome to host the file :-)

    p.s. logging out the port will unlock it.. but it will disconnect the
    sessions. probably not what you want.

      I doubt it. It should cause the current sessions to be
      disconnected, not logged out.

666.9Something to be said for both sidesMDVAX3::COARThu Jan 21 1988 15:105
    Dave's right. Those sessions will get disconnected. However, unless
    you're using virtual terminals (VTAnn), being disconnected means
    being logged off. So: you're both right! ;-)

666.10How do you make them disconnect?SKYLRK::ENDTERFri Jan 22 1988 19:106
       We are using DECSERVERS and virtual terminals, but the DECSERVER
    connections always connect as an LT device which does not have
    disconnect set. What am I missing? How do I get my DECSERVERS
    to disconnect instead of logging off?

You have to set the DISCONNECT bit in the default terminal characterstics -
SYSGEN parameter TTCHARDEF2, or something like that. Try the LCP documen-
tation - it should be there.
