676.0. "Ready for HACKERS II?" by UFP::MURPHY (Rick - WA1SPT/4) Wed Jan 27 1988 18:18

    This Conference is getting a bit huge, with lots of not-exactly-useful
    stuff; I'm going to write-lock it and re-open a new conference on
    January 30. I'll keep the old one around for a while.
    Any wild objections?

    How long is a while? I will occasionally go back thru this conf
    looking for interesting stuff that I didn't have an application
    for when it first went by...

You may want to try to compress the file, first, if space is a problem.

    "A while" is probably several months; space isn't the problem as much
    as the SEARCHers during the day. It does get a compress every so often.
    I may go thru it and zap the junk and leave it around more-or-less
    forever....

    ... but please keep the new name the same as it is now, and rename
    the write-locked one HACKERS_OLD or something,

    No way! If you do that, note UID's start from the begining again,
    but people will still be using there old seen maps!

    re. .4

    Why don't you just modify the target filename, and retain your notebook
    entry-name, presumably HACKERS.

re .6: (re .4) Presumably for the new users of the file, who'll try to access
HACKERS and get the old file, rather than the new one.

Many conferences have been restarted because of the size or other reasons.
The usual practice is to rename the old, writelocked conference and start
the new one under the same name.

The SEEN map is no problem, just type SET SEEN/BEFORE={some date before new
conference was created}. The moderator should set the notice of the conference
to a suggestion to do a SET SEEN so those who missed this discussion will know
why there is no more new notes.

(-: Or if the moderator's truely a hacker, he'll set the UID of the new
conference to pick up where the old one left off! :-)

676.8There really is no problem with renaming the old one.ZFC::DERAMOFrom the keyboard of Daniel V. D'EramoFri Jan 29 1988 20:4114
    If the existing UFP::HACKERS is renamed to, for example,
    UFP::HACKERS_1, then just do the following

         Notes> MODIFY ENTRY HACKERS /NAME=HACKERS_1 /FILE=UFP::HACKERS_1

    Now the HACKERS_1 entry in your notebook still points to the
    old notefile [i.e., this one] with your UNSEEN map intact.

    Then you can ADD ENTRY UFP::HACKERS assuming that is what the
    new one is called, and it will start off with everything unseen.

    I assumed that was what .6 was saying and .7 misunderstood.
