414.0. "Yes, this is for real !" by CHUNGA::HEISERM (Live from the Valley of the Sun!) Thu Feb 26 1987 14:08

Our group just purchased an 11/730 off DIAL running VMS 3.5.
The system is up and running but we can't get into it to set
up accounts. Is there any way to get into the system management
account from the console ? This may sound illegit but we're
basically new to this sort of thing. Anyone have any advice ?

Wasn't there a note recently about this type of thing?

Perform a conversational boot. Set the startup file to the console
(SET/STARTUP OPA0:). Make sure you type SET NOON and SET NOVERIFY when
you get the '$' prompt. You can then delete (or rename) the existing
SYSUAF.DAT and continue the boot procedure with '@SYS$SYSTEM:STARTUP'.
After the system is up and running, log in at the console with any
username and any password. Run AUTHORIZE to create new accounts.

Well I don't know about now. I came into the company as an electrical
systems tech 1 at the age of 17 back in "79". I needed a work permit
    just to come in !!!

re: .4,.5

And I was only 16! To get a permit I had to show that the job wouldn't
interfere with homework, and that it wouldn't involve heavy lifting (?)

    When I started working at Digital in 1975 I was 17. I didn't need
a work permit or any special documentation. Maybe that was because
I had already graduated from high school.
