366.0. "A1 fat trimming" by BRDWLK::VEALEK (Weekends too short!!) Wed Dec 10 1986 12:24

Have a Teammate (VAX 2000) with a 72 meg hard disk.
Would like to have captive 2 user All-In-1 environment.
Would like to give each user at least 5 meg of space for their
	   files.
Right now, with no "trimming" 60 meg of the disk is consumed by
	   VMS and All-In-1.

Goal is to get system and All-In-1 on a 42 meg disk.

Need suggestions on where I can trim 30 meg of fat out of the
system and All-In-1. IE: Since everyone is captive, zap VMS
help files. Since everyone is using WPSPLUS/ALL-IN-1 zap EDT
	   editor, etc....

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Use the REMOVE.com found in SYS$UPDATE to remove bundled products
from your system disk. For example, you probably don't need the
ERRor files, the FDL files, the macro and fortran files, the ODS1
    related files, etc...

And don't talk about un-released products in public conferences.

Re .2

By unannounced products I assume you mean All-in-1....

Re .0

Off the top, from ALL-IN-1 (Note the difference!):

Remove the whole OA$BUILD directory, you don't need it until you want
	to do a relink.

Remove all the CBIs. Bit dodgy if someone calls them by mistake, you
might want to take the options off the menus.

Remove any .EXE files that you don't want from OA$LIB, all the things
that do conversion, the WPS+ utilities etc.

Remove any help source files that you can find.

Remove the conversion form library CONVERT.FLB

After compiling the TXL you could get rid of the stuff in OA$DO and
OA$BLP, this is getting really tacky now!!

If you don't want to do any management, you could get rid of the
MANAGER form library and the management utilities... No that's probably
a bad idea, because you'll want to run the janitor and FCVR frequently
to keep the disc usage down.

Asking this question in the OAXTRA::ALLIN1_V2 Conference (Press KP7 etc.) might
be productive.

Good Luck,

Yes, removing the CBIs will save you some space, but I
recommend not doing so until your users are relatively
familiar with the system. There are plenty of ways to
nickel and dime yourself down from here, but everything
mentioned here and in the ALL-IN-1 conference should get
        you started.

    re: 366.2 "public conferences"

Please refrain from calling proprietary information or private property
of Digital Equipment Corporation "public". When you mean "limited to
the use of Digital employees" use those words. Use "public" specifically
to refer to things in which Digital has no ownership interest.

Take a look at KRYSTL::MICRONOTE, note 37, "In search of nanoVMS", by Ed Luwish.
It describes an initial attempt to create a minimum-disk-occupancy MicroVMS. If
it isn't totally applicable to your machine, it'll at least give you lots of
good ideas.

Press KP7 to add KRYSTL::MICRONOTE to your notebook.
