350.0. "uVAX I to 5 inch CP/M?" by PHENIX::SMITH (William P.N. (Wookie::) Smith) Mon Nov 03 1986 16:29

    We just got a microvax I in our lab, and I have found that by a lucky
    quirk of fate the physical format of the floppy disk is identical to
    that of my alternate CP/M machine at home, 512 bytes per sector, 10
    sectors per track, 96TPI, single sided. However, [no surprise here!]
    nothing else matches. Since 'sneaker-net' can be a lot faster and more
    convenient than Kermit at 1200 baud, I am now looking for a utility to
    read/write CP/M disks on a microvax I.  I can dig up the important CP/M
    info (reserved tracks, block size, directory blocks, etc) if nessesary,
    or I could hack the program if I could get ahold of the sources
    [assuming they were written in some sane language like Fortran or Z-80
    assembly :+) ] I know there are programs around to read 8 inch (3740)
    disks, are there any for 5 inch? I wouldn't even know how to begin
    trying to get my CP/M machine to talk VMS... :) Many thanks for any
    pointers!

    Try PAR5""::VAX_TOOLS:DOSFLX. It works with MS-DOS formatted disks,
    not CP/M, but if you have DOSFLX on your CP/M system, you should be
    able to read/write DOS format floppies.

    Never mind, it's VMSFLX.*

    Umm, any idea where I could find a program to read/write MessDos
    files from CP/M with 96 TPI floppies and a non-standard bios?

    The CPM that came on the DECMATE allows conversion from MSDOS to
    CPM format, I think.

350.5no Decmate, S-100!PHENIX::SMITHWilliam P.N. (Wookie::) SmithThu Nov 06 1986 15:3311
    OK, but I don't have a DECMATE, or a Messdos machine of any kind. Does
    the Microvax talk to a number of physical formats [bytes per sector,
    sectors per track, tracks per inch, MFM or FM, and such like that]?

    I seem to be able to talk the same physical format, but now I need a
    program so allow the Microvax to read/write the CP/M logical format
    [directory structures, block sizes, reserved tracks, sector skewing,
    all that fun stuff].

    Look in the TOOLSHED. I thought I saw a CP/M read/write utillity
    in there a while back.

	Try CPMFLOPPY in the TOOLSHED. Its written in BASIC so it should
be easy enough for you to modify.

    The TOOLSHED is a repository of neat tools written by various people.
    For more information, check out TLE::EASYNET_CONFERENCES, notes
    #796 and #870 (Press KP7 or select...). These notes describe the
    TOOLSHED conference which is writable by anyone, and the
    SW_TOOLS_CATALOG which is read-only to non-moderators and contains
    descriptions and installation procedures for many useful tools.
    Also, as a side note, you can find information about these software
    tools in VTX. The notes indicated will tell you more.

350.12Files-11 spec?PHENIX::SMITHWilliam P.N. (WOOKIE::) SmithFri Jan 23 1987 18:1110
    I have a friend who is pretty good with 'C', and he thinks he
    might be able to hack up a transfer program under CP/M, but I have
    very little idea of the format (files-11?) of the microvax disks
    other than the low-level physical format mentioned earlier. Where
    can I get a FILES-11 spec (prefereably on-line?)?

    Many thanks!
