342.0. "Help on DCL debug??" by IOSG::HUFF () Mon Oct 27 1986 14:05

                           -< DCL debugger >-

    Hi folks,

      I have been reading this notes file for a few weeks now and
      have subsequently picked up a lot of good tips for making my life
      on a VAX a damn sight easier and more interesting. However I would
      be interested in any further info any body could give me regarding
      a past note. This note and its replies describes the use of a
      DCL debugger. Any answers containing one syllable words will be
      helpful! (-:

      While I'm here, does anybody know if the VT220 setup feature
      'conceal' stops the contents of the answerback buffer from being
      accessed/executed remotely?

    Appologies for appearing dumb, but I'm new to this game!

    Cheers

    Richard.

342.2And the ANSWERback is...UFP::MURPHYRick, Washington, District of ConfusionThu Oct 30 1986 13:2010
    The "Conceal" option does not stop the answerback from being accessed;
    just send a ^E to the terminal and it belches out the answerback.
    What it DOES do is to stop someone from walking up to your terminal
    and reading the current contents of the answerback by just going
    into SETUP mode.

    [Of course, there's an easy hack around this; if you can log in
    to the system the terminal is connected to, you just type ^V^E
    and the terminal belches away...]

    Or just walk up to the terminal and type control-break...

As long as a remote user can send a broadcast message with a ^E in it to
 your terminal, your answerback message can be executed remotely, whether
  it's "concealed" or not.

As far as I know, it's not possible for a remote user to alter the con-
 tents of the answerback buffer. I've heard apocryphal stories about
  some undocumented VT100 escape sequence that could do it, but I've
   not heard the same stories regarding VT200s.

For me, typing

	^V^E

does not produce the answerback message. I'm on VAX/VMS. Perhaps you're
on TOPS20 ?
