310.0. "Who does LOGICAL IO?" by CRATE::COBB (Danny Cobb, LAS Eng., LKG) Mon Sep 15 1986 13:24

    The DFS (Distributed File Service) project (under development) will
    provide a virtual block interface (eg READ/WRITEVBLK) to applications.
    A virtual block is a particular block of a known file.

    Naturally, the most prominent "application" will be RMS.

    We're interested in learning about any applications out there which
    decide to go after disk blocks using LOGICAL IO (eg READ/WRITELBLK).
    A logical block is a particular block of a known VOLUME. Such
    applications would be incompatible with DFS.

    Feel free to reply here, or send me mail with your information.

310.1WHO DOES IT LOGICALLY ?TROPPO::RICKARDDoug Rickard - waterfall minder.Wed Oct 08 1986 02:147
	Yes, I'm stupid enough to have written a number of programs that do
logical i/o. Some of these are disk recovery programs for recovering
data off crashed VAX or PDP-11 disks. Others are to read foreign disk
formats e.g. see my CPMFLOPPY program in the Toolshed.

310.2WHY DO IT LOGICALLY ???TROPPO::RICKARDDoug Rickard - waterfall minder.Wed Oct 08 1986 02:2410

Just remembered, my VAX/XXDP program also uses logical i/o. It allows
one to mount a PDP-11 diagnostic pack ( which is in modified DOS V2
format (remember that ???)) on a VAX and down line load the diagnostics
to PDP-11s hanging off serial terminal lines.
