281.0. "VMS device mnemonics and what they are?" by JON::MORONEY (Madman) Mon Aug 04 1986 20:36

Where can I find a list of VMS devices, and what VMS calls them? I can't find
such a list in any of the VMS manuals. Something listed like:

DU	= MSCP disk
XQ	= DEQNA Ethernet controller
etc.

but including pseudodevices (mailboxes, etc.) $ SHOW DEV on some systems has
me curious.

    Check the device name table which starts on page 14-11 of the
    "Writing a Device Driver for VAX/VMS" manual (vol 10C of the
    V4.4 manual set).

    For anyone with an older manual, chapter 14 is entitled 'Loading
    a Device Driver', and the table is in the middle of a discussion
    of SYSGEN and Autoconfigure.

    The SYSGEN manual also contains a list of device names on page SGN-7
    (V4.4 doc set). This list does not seem to include pseudo devices.

    I believe the Guide to Software Installation contains tables of
    the device names for various devices.
