162.0. "Has anybody seen this one?" by APACHE::LAWLER () Mon Sep 30 1985 15:07

I have noticed that every once in a while while when I do a phone/dir
or try to copy something over the network, if things are very slow,
and I give up and hit a few repeted CTRL_Y's, the system responds
with a "no privelage for attempted operation", dumps a list of
numbers, and apparantly kills my process. (The next <cr> is
answered by username: .) I never noted exactly what numbers
come up on the screen, as I am usually not expecting to crash my
process with just a ctrl_y, but will the next time. Anybody know
what "attempted operation" I tried, or why the whole process gets
killed? (Other times, I get the expected return to the $ prompt.)

  BTW, I think we have vms v4.2 on the system.

	It clearly sounds like a VMS bug. Off hand, it sounds like
DCL is requesting a bug check from supervisor mode which kills your
process. Bug checks in other modes tend to crash the system (but
not always).

	This seems out of the domain of hackers, check the
VMSNOTES file on VAXWRK. There may or may not be some one
there who could tell you how to isolate the problem.

There are more ways to get DCL to dump like this in note 110.
