| Several notes and replies in this young NOTESfile touch on the increasing use
of the term "hacker" by the popular press to denote a person who breaks into
computer systems for sport. I'm afraid this connotation is becoming endemic
to Digital as well; witness the following excerpt from an article in "Mountain
Views," (the HLO equivalent to "Digital This Week"), May 1984.
...There is a parallel between the way computer hacking and
shoplifting has evolved in our society. Do you remember when
shoplifting was wrong because it really was stealing but stores did
not prosecute, and if they had tried they probably would have been
laughed out of court. Shortly after that the stores got fed up and
started putting out "shoplifting is a crime" signs. Well, several
states are enacting legislation that says, "hacking is a crime."
