1104.0. "Kate Mulgrew" by POLAR::RICHARDSON (A stranger in my own life) Mon Apr 28 1997 20:57

Well, it's been 3 seasons, do you like her yet? I do.

I was watching an old movie with a young Katherine Hepburn this weekend
and all I could see was Captain Janeway in black and white. I'm telling
you, they look the same and talk the same, many of the same mannerisms.
I find the resemblance quite startling.

While I'm sure Ms. Mulgrew would be very flattered at your comparison,
I'm also sure she would be the first to tell you that she has a long
way to go to measure up to Katherine Hepburn's status. While I can
see where you are coming from, I can't make the same comparison.

Mulgrew is ok in her role, but she's hardly the reason I watch the show.
Of course, I often wonder why I do watch the show, but at the very
least I can sit back and make MST3K like comments, and that can
be very enjoyable. ;-)

I was comparing the resemblance, not the stature of acting.

While I can agree with you right here that she does resemble Hepburn
somewhat, that isn't the impression I ever get while watching her.
Mulgrew is her own distinct actress and is very different in her acting
that Hepburn was, at least to me. I never have any sensations of
    Hepburn while watching Voyager.

And yes, she is one of the reasons I feel the show works so well. I was
very pleasantly surprised by her. Given the rushed second choice
disharmony surrounding the casting of Mulgrew as Janeway, I was fearful
the show was getting a weak product and that they'd blow their chance
to have a female captain on the show. I feared the result would be smug
execs, grinning ear to ear, saying "See, a female captain just won't
work" the way they did during the TOS pilot.

Now I can't imagine anyone else but Mulgrew in the spot, nor would I
ever want to. She totally won me over within the first few episodes.

1104.4female first officer in TOS not captainLABC::HAThu May 08 1997 16:299
    Re: .-1

I don't think it was a female captain the near-sighted NBC execs
objected to - it was having a female "Number 1" Even Gene Roddenberry
commented that to be fair, even the test audiences objected to Majel
Barrett as the first officer asking "who does she think SHE is."

Just in case any of you ain't been to your local 7-11.....

Kate Mulgrew is on the cover of this week's TV guide, along with....

    ....the BORG!

Is there actually any difference besides the cover?

I think it's a real low ploy to only put that cover on the newstands.
Those of us with a subscription got a different cover entirely,
about some sitcom, but the Voyager/Borg story is still inside.
