UPN - Voyager - (STV321)

When Kes undergoes treatment in a bio-temporal chamber to extend her
lifespan, her cells are left in a state of flux causing her to be out of
temporal sync. She then travels back and forth through time, experiences the
beginning and final phases of her Ocampan lifespan and gets a glimpse of the
Voyager crew's future.

Starring Kate Mulgrew as Captain Janeway, Robert Beltran as Chakotay, Roxann
Biggs-Dawson as B'Elanna Torres, Jennifer Lien as Kes, Robert Duncan McNeill
as Lt. Tom Paris, Ethan Phillips as Neelix, Robert Picardo as The Doctor,
Tim Russ as Tuvok, Garrett Wang as Harry Kim.

Guest starring are Jessica Collins as Linnin, Michail L. Maguire as Arnis,
Janna Michaels as young Kes, Rachel Harris as Martis, Christopher Aguilar as
Andrew.

The story was written by Kenneth Biller and the episode was directed by
Allan Kroeker.

They appear to have caught on that Jennifer Lien has some
acting skill and that Kes is a more interesting character than
some of the other dullards in the cast.

Assigning her to the medical staff was smart, now she has something
to apply her intelligence to. Unlike Neelix whose primary duty lately
has been the frying of eggs.

They didn't bother explaining the obvious time paradox. While going
backwards she should have been easily able to warn the captain to
avoid the threat that caused her infection in the first place.

An interesting book in a similar vein is "Time's Arrow" by Martin Amis.
About a man who is born old, goes backwards through life, and dies
as an infant by returning to the womb.

I really liked this one. The way they gradually brought in the details as Kes
progresses backwards was quite well done. Good writing. Wonderful job by
Jennifer Lien.

I've heard a rumor that next season they're going to concentrate on the "big 5"
(Janeway, Chakotay, Torres, Paris, and the Doctor) and relegate the others to
mostly supporting roles. I've also seen the blech! ads for next season about
how exciting Voyager is going to be. I really must not be part of the target
audience if these are the kinds of things Paramount thinks will win them over.
I was looking forward to more emphasis on Kes and Kim, and more creative and
thoughtful episodes like this one.

I too liked this one, Jennifer was very good.
The way they aged her was also well done.

Like the last noter mentioned, I would also like to see Kim featured
    more.

\The one thing that did not sit well with me was how easily she managed
to convince the people of the time line she was in that she was going back
in time, oh yes, she did get a couple of "Are you sure you didn't dream
it" but no-body really pushed the point.
The fact that the daughter of Kes and Tom grew up fast enough to marry
Kim makes me think the (Incert name of Kes' race, I can't remember it
right now) gene is stronger than the human one, I wonder if that means
any offspring from a human and a ? marriage will only live nine years
or will the human part give them more time.
There were a few smiles, the doctor ofcourse provided them as usual by
reminding us how brilliant he is :-)
btw I think he looks good with hair.

1090.5another well written oneAPLVEW::DEBRIAElanguage by declarationTue Apr 15 1997 18:3823
Another great Voyager episode. This makes two really good ones that featured
Kes. Why would they turn away from their success and focus on the big five
excluding their strong side characters? That said, it does seem like we
haven't seen much of Chakotay or Torres or Paris lately. They deserve their
turn in the light too. All except Tuvok, they could lose him in a space lock
accident and I wouldn't complain. His only use is as a foil for Neelix to
deal with. I like Neelix on the crew as well, he aids the human interaction
I feel (much in the way George on Seinfeld does). We may not like him, but
we recognize those human frailties in others and it 'grounds' the rest of the
characters by providing contrast and making them feel more real.

To me, the doctor didn't look 'right' with hair. I guess I've become used to
him the way he is. I suppose he will never lose his arrogance in any
possible alternate timelines (if something is going to change). Where is the
  'Bones' in him hiding? :-)

I'll hold judgement until I see a few of these 'big five' episodes. I hope
they don't water down their strong supporting characters of Kes and Kim and
  Neelix et al...

I usually am partial to long hair on women, but Kes with long hair
just doesn't fit somehow. However, a wife that is guaranteed to
live a maximum of 9 years might be an idea ;^).

If it was Kes, it would be a bad idea. I would be finding a way to
extend the lifespan of that babe.

Re: last two

Boy, you guys sound like you'd have trouble making a marriage last more than
nine years anyway.

I've recently seen a rumor that Kes (Jennifer Lien) is leaving the show
sometime during next season.

    How?

Will they kill her off, (She's not old enough yet to die of old age) leave
her on a planet they stop at, (maybe she falls in love with someone
there and decides to stay) In space there are not too many easy ways to
    write out a main character.

Of course they did forget to tell us she and Neelix had broken up, she
just may not be there one day and they may not even bother to mention
    where she went to.

          re .11

But in the episode "The Warlord" where Kes had the "alien takeover"
she told Neelix that she did not want to be with him anymore.
Even though she was not quite in her right mind, I guess that her
true feelings about them as a couple came out to the surface before
the "Warlord" showed himself. It seems that it was more Her talking
than the alien when she said these things.

          I'm glad they broke up!

I think you've already dated yourself. (11 years, down the drain...)
